Getting Strategic with Security Budget Planning | CSO Online

However, as budgeting traditionally occurs in silos, security leaders are still concerned the committed spend will not be sufficient. A recent AT&T Cybersecurity poll showed that nearly one-third (28%) of cybersecurity professionals are concerned about the prioritization of security investments.

As we near the end of the year, a time when security budgets are often reassessed, let's take a look at common direct and indirect security costs — and how organizations can get strategic with their security spending.

New Space Race Shoots for Moon and Mars on a Budget - The Washington Post

The first space race was a competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for national pride and military advantage. Now NASA is farming out missions to private companies, and other countries have joined the race — notably China and India. The moon and Mars remain tantalizing goals for many nations, as are the technological advances that space exploration can drive.

Since the space shuttle program ended in 2011, NASA, as the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration is better known, had relied on Russia to ferry U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station, which has orbited Earth for two decades. That changed in 2020 when billionaire Elon Musk's company, Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, flew its first crewed missions, powered by reusable boosters that dramatically cut launch costs. Harbor Business Briefs | The Daily World

The Grays Harbor PUD Board of Commissioners have approved a $127.6 million operating budget for 2021. The spending plan will invest $10.5 million in the utility system and infrastructure in the coming year and will spend roughly $70.8 million on the energy PUD customers rely on to power their homes and businesses.

“This budget really comes down to service, affordability and reliability,” said PUD Commission President Russ Skolrood. “The energy the utility purchases continues to be amongst the cleanest and most affordable in the country and the system that delivers that energy must do so while standing up to the rigors of the Grays Harbor environment. The investments the board has approved for the coming year will ensure that our customers can rely on those services to continue.

CISOs face a whole new budget world this season | SC Media

It's budget season for many CISOs, and cybersecurity investment for 2021 looks a lot different than it did a year ago. In late 2019, organizations were focused on rationalizing infrastructure, optimizing spend, and automating for efficiency. Fast forward to today and the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed our priority list.

The widespread and immediate work-from-home requirement caused companies everywhere to engage in emergency digital transformation projects. In fact, the 2020 Flexera State of the Cloud Report found that because of the pandemic, more than half of the companies polled expect higher cloud usage than initially planned.

Neera Tanden, Biden's OMB pick, could face scrutiny for Wall Street ties

President-elect Joe Biden's choice to lead the Office of Management and Budget has been a political insider for well over a decade, and the alliances she has developed as an influential leader within the Democratic Party could come under scrutiny during her confirmation process — from both sides of the aisle.

Tanden, the 50-year-old daughter of immigrants from India, would be the first woman of color to lead the OMB if she is confirmed.

Since 2011, Neera Tanden has been CEO of the Center for American Progress, a Washington-based liberal think tank, and its political arm, the Center for American Progress Action Fund. The nonprofit was originally founded by John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign chairman.

Final cost for Nieman Road improvements in Shawnee comes in $500,000 over budget

The Nieman Road improvements in downtown Shawnee cost the city about half a million dollars above the original project budget. Above, an image of the completed project from summer 2020.

The Shawnee City Council on Nov. 23 voted 7-0 to accept a cost increase to the project of about $511,500 — bringing the final contract amount for Amino Brothers Company to roughly $6.7 million. The original project cost was just under $6.1 million.

City staff reported that the major increases to the final cost are a result of expanding the scope of the project at the 55th Street intersection, along a section of Nieman along Johnson Drive, and on most of the side streets along Nieman. These include:

Lawyer in JEA sale investigation recommends dropping subpoenas into Baker's companies | Jax Daily

Stephen Busey told the Council’s Special Investigatory Committee into JEA on Nov. 30 that while he thinks the subpoenas would uncover documents showing communications about the JEA sale among Baker, bidder NextEra Energy Inc. and the Curry administration, enforcing them in court would be expensive and take several months.

Busey, an attorney with Smith Hulsey & Busey, told the committee that Baker declined through his lawyer to respond to subpoenas approved by the Council Rules Committee on Oct. 20.
