The Lee County Sheriff's Office said Saturday it may appeal a court ruling ordering a nearly $13,000 payout related to overtime for a former employee.
A Lee County jury Dec.18 found the Sheriff's Office violated the federal Fair Labor Standards Act requiring the payment of overtime by willfully denying such compensation to Joseph Caiazza, a former deputy, for overtime hours he worked from December 2015 to August 2017.

The jury awarded $12,180.60 in damages based on a finding that the Sheriff's Office knew or recklessly disregarded whether its conduct violated the FLSA. A release from Morgan & Morgan said because the jury found the violation of the FLSA was willful, Caiazza could be awarded double damages available under the law.

What You Need to Know About That Extra $300 a Week for Unemployed Workers - THE CITY
After months of negotiations, lawmakers reached an agreement over the weekend on a $900 billion stimulus package that was passed by Congress on Monday. (If you'd like to read the bill, it's about 5,500 pages long .) For millions of struggling Americans who have lost their jobs during the pandemic, some help appears to be on the way, barring any last-minute changes instigated by President Donald Trump .
NOTE: The extra $300 in weekly unemployment benefits will automatically apply to recipients, but it has to be administered by the state. So it's possible this could take some time and some of these benefits could end up getting delivered retroactively, Farrell Brody, a workers' rights attorney at TakeRoot Justice said.

I got two $1,200 stimulus payments last time. Will I receive two $600 checks this time?
To my surprise, I got two stimulus checks during the first round of economic impact payments. One was deposited into my bank, and the other was an actual physical check. Will I receive two stimulus payments this time around as well? I have friends who received no check whatsoever, and they were furious (understandably) that I received more than one.

The Internal Revenue Service, after a year of employees working overtime and working tirelessly to get economic impact payments delivered to millions of Americans, will likely discover their mistake and adjust the payment in your 2020 tax return. Rarely do such windfalls come without a price. Such mistakes are usually rectified manually or by computer. You have been warned.

Opinion | Uber, Instacart and others' vaccine hypocrisy - The Washington Post
If you believe Instacart, the hundreds of thousands of "shoppers" who fulfill its customers' orders are not full-time employees. Sure, shoppers tell of working 50-hour weeks or more , and, yes, the company's algorithms encourage shoppers to work more hours to receive more orders. But they're not full-time employees, insists the company, since that would require a minimum wage, overtime pay, workers' compensation and other inconveniences to Instacart's bottom line.
To be clear, the workers themselves absolutely should be given priority for vaccines. Ride-hailing drivers, delivery people and personal shoppers are all on the pandemic front lines. Instacart shoppers, for example, are literally being paid to risk their health at grocery stores. So they deserve protection.
