Every Single Lie Trump Is Now Telling About His Business

V isit the Trump Organization's website, and you'll find glassy New York skyscrapers, rolling Virginia vines and a shimmering Vegas pool. Alongside all the glamor, there's hard data—facts and figures about the president's business. Much of that data, however, is not true.

Consider the statistics about 40 Wall Street. The website calls the skyscraper a "72-story landmarked address." It's actually a 63-story building, according to a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The site says it has 1.3 million square feet of office space. UK body sets billion-pound budget for COVID financial firm collapses | Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's scheme for compensating consumers hit by financial company failures has set itself a billion-pound ($1.37 billion) budget for the coming year to cope with a likely surge in collapses due to COVID-19.

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme's (FSCS) budget of 1.04 billion pounds for the 2021/22 financial year that starts in April is its highest in six years.

The FSCS also said it would add 78 million pounds to the current year's budget - a lower than expected increase - due to more firms failing, pushing the total for 2020/21 to 700 million pounds.

Following Washington Supreme Court Overtime Ruling, Dairy Farmers Seek Legislation to Limit

The question of fairness was at the center of a hearing Thursday on a Washington Senate bill that would limit the ability of courts to award retroactive pay to workers.

Senate Bill 5172, sponsored by Sen. Curtis King of Yakima, seeks to prohibit a court from ordering retroactive pay in overtime wage claims if it creates a "substantially inequitable result." The bill went before the Senate's Labor, Commerce & Tribal Affairs Committee Thursday.

The bill comes several months after the Washington Supreme Court ruled an exemption on overtime pay for dairy workers that dates back more than six decades was unconstitutional.

Final Treasury Regulations Issued Addressing the Application of Section 1061 to Carried Interests

Gain from the sale of capital assets held for more than one year (long-term capital gain) is generally taxed at preferential rates (the highest such rate is currently 20%) for non-corporate taxpayers.

Section 1061 increased the requisite holding period for long-term gain preferential rates from one year to three years with respect to gain attributable to “applicable partnership interests” (APIs).

Under Section 1061, a partnership interest qualifies as an API if it is directly or indirectly transferred to or held by a taxpayer in connection with the performance of substantial services by the taxpayer (or a related person) in an “applicable trade or business” (ATB).

IRS Issues Final Carried Interest Regulations | Stinson LLP - JDSupra

While a one-year holding period is generally required for long-term capital gains, Section 1061 generally imposes a three-year holding period requirement in order to receive long-term capital gain treatment for gains allocated (or otherwise recognized) with respect to an "applicable partnership interest" (API).

Thus, an API generally includes a carried interest held by the sponsor (or manager) of an investment fund (such as a private equity fund or hedge fund) that entitles the sponsor (or manager) to a share of the fund's future profits. An API would also include a partnership interest in a carry vehicle or a general partner entity issued to individuals in exchange for their performance of investment management services.

UnStoppable - The frenzied rise of GameStop | Finance & economics | The Economist

A WEEK AGO few people had probably heard of GameStop, the beleaguered brick-and-mortar purveyor of video games. Millennials might recall visiting a store in their youth; their parents, perhaps, taking them. None can claim ignorance now. The firm's share price has spiked from a few dollars in 2020 to a peak of more than $350 on January 27th, transforming a firm that was valued at less than $200m in April 2020 into a $24bn middleweight.

Why such a fuss? Perhaps because the story itself is staggering. There is a tiny nugget of sense in GameStop being worth more now than it was last year. In August Ryan Cohen, the former boss of Chewy, an online pet-food store, began amassing a large stake. In November he turned activist, writing to the board to urge it to invest in e-commerce. The folly of buying local - Buy American is an economic-policy mistake | Leaders | The Economist

The "Buy American" agenda is long-running. A law passed in 1933 requires the federal government to prefer domestically produced goods to foreign ones; it is reinforced by an unwieldy mass of similar state and local rules. The stimulus Mr Biden oversaw as vice-president after the global financial crisis targeted American suppliers with American supply chains. President Trump issued reams of executive orders aiming to favour domestic firms over their foreign competitors.

Mr Biden campaigned on going further than Mr Trump, whom he castigated for not doing enough. It will take more than a stroke of the pen to fulfil that promise. As past administrations have discovered, America's commitments to the World Trade Organisation ( WTO ) constrain its ability to discriminate in favour of its own firms (see article ).

Democrats Prepare to Move on Economic Aid, With or Without the G.O.P. - The New York Times

Party leaders remain hopeful that Mr. Biden can sign his so-called American Rescue Plan into law by mid-March at the latest, even with the competing demands of a Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald J. Trump, which is set to begin the week of Feb. 8.

"We want it to be bipartisan always, but we can't surrender if they are not going to be doing that," Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said at a news conference on Capitol Hill.

"I do think that we have more leverage getting cooperation on the other side if they know we have an alternative as well," she added.
