The budgeting system my parents used to retire early - Business Insider

"The practice of capturing your spending habits can make you change your behaviors," my stepmom explained. "But try not to let it, because you want to see how you really spend your money."

The spreadsheet my parents use is fairly straightforward. Their spending is tallied up by month and broken up across about a dozen categories, each category with a monthly budget they try not to exceed. Each month, when they input their spending in each category, the spreadsheet totals expenses for the month and then provides a number for how far above or below their monthly spending goal they were. That way, if they go a little over one month, they know to cut back the following month.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I had said yes to free trials for a workout program that I tested out for a week or two and then forgot to cancel before the monthly charges kicked in. A similar thing happened with a streaming service I signed up for and didn't use, and a grocery delivery program I had tried but didn't properly cancel and was still getting charged for.

Xiaomi pulls an Apple, 'cancels' charger in box with upcoming Mi 11 - The Financial Express

Xiaomi just pulled an Apple, or at least it's going to, come December 28, the day it announces its next top-tier flagship Mi 11 phone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 inside. The phone in question will come with a brand-new sleek retail packaging without a charging adapter in a bid to protect the environment. While all that is nice and good, remember, Xiaomi is the same company that took potshots at Apple for removing in-box accessories with the iPhone 12, for very similar reasons.

In case you are keeping track:

California leaders fear remote culture could fuel business departures

Back-to-back moves of iconic Silicon Valley firms' headquarters to Texas are raising fresh concerns about California's standing in the innovation economy. Business leaders worry that the successful shift to remote work — and the ability of many jobs to be performed from anywhere — will drive yet more companies out of the notoriously high-cost state.

"This pandemic really had a steroidal effect on the ecosystem," said Jim Wunderman, who heads the Bay Area Council, a business group that represents CEOs in the region. "I think it behooves us to recognize we have a problem."

Sky reports that a number of workers at the Milton Keynes Lighthouse Laboratory — which has reportedly been asked to process 70,000 tests per day — have contracted the virus in recent days.

Staff on three of the four scientific teams at the lab, as well as administrative and warehouse staff have been infected, Sky says.

The British government confirmed to Sky that the outbreak exists, but insisted that the lab has followed all protocols for staying COVID secure in the workplace.

Trump vetoes $740 billion defense bill after Section 230 complaints - The Verge

President Donald Trump has vetoed an annual defense bill authorizing billions of dollars in military spending after complaints that the bill did not include changes to Section 230, the provision that gives social media companies legal immunity over much of the content posted by their users.

Earlier this month, Trump threatened to veto the $740 billion spending bill, the National Defense Authorization Act, unless Congress included a provision that would repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Congress approved the measure by veto-proof margins in December. House lawmakers will return to Capitol Hill on Monday for a vote to override the president's veto, according to Politico' s Connor O'Brien .

Pope Christmas address: COVID vaccine priority for 'most vulnerable' - Business Insider

In his Christmas address Friday, Pope Francis urged the rich to step back and allow the "most vulnerable and needy" populations to receive a coronavirus vaccine first.

"I ask everyone — government leaders, businesses, international organizations — to foster cooperation and not competition, and to seek a solution for everyone: vaccines for all, especially for the most vulnerable and needy of all regions of the planet," he added. "Before all others: the most vulnerable and needy!"
