Close quarters, a crush of work, and inconsistent — at best — adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.
This holiday season, that's the reality for workers in the region's warehouses and distribution centers responsible for moving an unprecedented volume of merchandise bought online at a time when in-person shopping carries risks. The overtime that workload requires is a boon to those financially struggling during the pandemic, noted Richard Hooker Jr., the top union official with Teamsters Local 623, which represents UPS workers in Philadelphia.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Lee County jury last week found that the Lee County Sheriff's Office violated the federal law requiring the payment of overtime, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), by willfully denying compensation to Joseph Caiazza, a deputy, for overtime hours he worked from December 2015 to August 2017.
Represented by Morgan & Morgan, Caiazza sought to recover unpaid overtime wages he was denied by the Sheriff's Office between December 2015 and August 2017. He was a well-respected deputy, who was awarded Officer of Year multiple times throughout his career.

Governor calls for new sites for South Dakotans with intellectual and developmental disabilities
PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Population shifts in the Redfield area have made staffing more difficult at the South Dakota Development Center.
Those shortages, and the overtime pay to cover them, are part of why Governor Kristi Noem wants to go another way.
She has asked the Legislature to adjust state government’s budget for serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Among the proposals unveiled in her December 8 budget speech, the governor called for $8,364,225 in one-time spending to establish crisis-diversion centers for adults in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
USPS shipping and tracking delays are
Kevin Bruns decided weeks ago that it wasn't a good idea to travel to Chicago to spend Christmas with his son and daughter-in-law. Instead, the Pittsford resident opted to stay safely at home and send Christmas presents through the US Postal Service.
He dropped the package off at the post office in Fairport on Dec. 13, but for the next nine days, the tracking data showed the package was stuck at the Northwest Rochester distribution center.
"It's frustrating and stressful," said Bruns. "I don't blame the men and women working at the post office. I'm sure they're frustrated, too. They aren't getting the resources they need."
