East Deer’s proposed $1.5 million budget for 2021 calls for no property tax increase despite a 23% increase in spending.

Commissioners approved the proposed budget at their Thursday meeting, and will vote to approve the final budget on Dec. 31. The tax rate will remain at 4.9 mills.

Commissioners Chairman Tony Taliani said the proposed increase in spending has to do with four construction projects the township wants to undertake next year. This year’s budget was about $1.2 million.

States try to rescue small businesses as U.S. aid is snarled - StarTribune.com

With the economic recovery faltering and federal aid stalled in Washington, state governments are stepping in to try to help small businesses survive the pandemic winter.

But there is a limit to what states can do. The pandemic has ravaged budgets, driving up costs and eroding tax revenue. And unlike the federal government, most states cannot run budget deficits.

"From the jobs point of view and the economy point of view and the workers' point of view and small businesses, we've got to get that help from the federal government. That's the only place we can get it," said Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio, a Republican.

Japan 'tankan' business survey shows optimism over recovery

A quarterly survey by the Bank of Japan shows business sentiment has improved sharply with expectations that the economy is recovering from a year-long recession.

The BOJ’s “tankan” released Monday reported rebounds in all categories, both manufacturing and nonmanufactuing companies, large and small. It was a marked improvement from the past several quarterly reports as Japan battled the coronavirus pandemic.

The main measure of business conditions of large manufacturers rose to minus 10 from minus 27, while business sentiment among large non-manufacturers such as service industries rose to minus 5 from minus 12. The actual results were better than forecast.
