Biden’s Economic Team Suggests Focus on Workers and Income Equality - The New York Times

WASHINGTON — President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. formally announced his top economic advisers on Monday, choosing a team that is stocked with champions of organized labor and marginalized workers, signaling an early focus on efforts to speed and spread the gains of the recovery from the pandemic recession.

In a sign that Mr. Biden plans to focus on spreading economic wealth, his transition team put issues of equality and worker empowerment at the forefront of its news release announcing the nominees, saying they would help create "an economy that gives every single person across America a fair shot and an equal chance to get ahead."

Powell stresses importance of lending programs, calls economic outlook 'extraordinarily

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell emphasized the importance of the lending programs it has deployed during the coronavirus pandemic, telling senators in testimony to be delivered Tuesday that they've been integral in keeping the economic fallout from being worse.

Many of the key programs that the central bank has used since March are expiring at the end of the year, and the Fed will be forced to return the funding that supports them.

"These programs serve as a backstop to key credit markets and have helped restore the flow of credit from private lenders through normal channels," Powell said in prepared remarks for the Senate Finance Committee. "We have deployed these lending powers to an unprecedented extent."

Michigan cities want work-from-home non-residents to pay income tax

LANSING — With further coronavirus relief money still stalled at the federal level, pressure is building for state lawmakers to provide financial help to struggling cites and businesses.

On Monday, city leaders called for state legislative actions they said would help prevent cuts to vital services such as police and fire protection, without requiring a state handout.

Late last week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer asked lawmakers to pass a $100-million state relief plan for Michigan families and small businesses, saying the state can no longer wait for federal action.

Franchise Taxes in California and Delaware Similar Only in Name

Recently, I came across a proxy statement filed a California corporation seeking shareholder approval to reincorporate in Delaware. In the midst of a lengthy disquisition on the pros and cons of reincorporation, the issuer noted that the franchise taxes payable in Delaware may be greater than the equivalent or other similar taxes currently payable in California.

The Delaware franchise tax is a fee imposed by the State of Delaware for the right or privilege to be a Delaware entity. It is not based on income or company activity; it is a tax that must be paid to maintain the entity's good standing status. California's franchise tax is quite different. It is basically a tax on California source income. In general, reincorporation will not result in Delaware's franchise tax being substituted for California's franchise tax.

IASB plans possible new M&A accounting standards | Accounting Today

The International Accounting Standards Board began a consultation process Monday in preparation for possible changes in the accounting standards for mergers and acquisitions involving companies within the same group, in other words, business combinations under common control.

A current International Financial Reporting Standard, IFRS 3, Business Combinations, already provides the reporting requirements for mergers and acquisitions, which are referred to as business combinations in IFRS standards. However, the existing standard doesn't actually specify how to report transactions involving transfers of businesses between companies that are already within the same group. Such transactions are common in many countries around the world.

Can a Start-Up Mentality Save Small Businesses? - The New York Times

In early February, things were looking good for Practice San Francisco , a center offering individual psychotherapy and classes for children and adults that promote physical and mental well-being. Business was so good that owner Nina Kaiser, a psychologist, had just renovated and moved into a bigger space with the goal of doubling revenue.

Then the coronavirus pandemic hit. In early March, Ms. Kaiser moved all her classes and counseling services online. Fairly quickly, however, video fatigue set in. "After a few weeks, we saw a big downturn in attendance across all our programs, even psychotherapy," she said. Thus began a period of "endless pivoting and troubleshooting."

Ten Mind-Opening Business Books For 2020

Too many business books are scarcely-disguised marketing materials for the authors' services. All too frequently, they pick on some facet of what's involved in running a company and trumpet that as "the solution." Even worse, some are hymns of praise to obsolete 20th century management practices: they argue that firms would succeed if only they applied these obsolete practices more relentlessly.

These ten books should be read by anyone interested in the real thing—the principles, processes and practices of 21st century management and leadership. The common thread of all the books is an ability to thrive in a world of overwhelming change. This quality is sometimes called agility, or adaptivity,  or innovation, or even a strange name like Rendanheyi. The perspective is global: the firms covered are American, European and Asian.

Receive Money from FEMA? Keep Your Receipts To Show How You Used It : NorthEscambia.com

If you received Hurricane Sally recovery money from FEMA, the federal agency is reminding you to use the money for its intended purpose and to keep receipts for three years.

Disaster assistance is intended to help residents meet basic disaster-related needs. A letter explaining what the payment is to be used for arrives within a day or two of the check or direct deposit payment.

If applicants spend the payment on anything other than the purpose for which it is intended, they may be denied future disaster assistance. In some cases, FEMA may ask that the money be returned.

New Space Race Shoots for Moon and Mars on a Budget - The Washington Post

The first space race was a competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for national pride and military advantage. Now NASA is farming out missions to private companies, and other countries have joined the race — notably China and India. The moon and Mars remain tantalizing goals for many nations, as are the technological advances that space exploration can drive.

Since the space shuttle program ended in 2011, NASA, as the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration is better known, had relied on Russia to ferry U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station, which has orbited Earth for two decades. That changed in 2020 when billionaire Elon Musk's company, Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, flew its first crewed missions, powered by reusable boosters that dramatically cut launch costs. Italian Pandemic Decree Complicates F1 Budget Cap Mandates for Ferarri

While the biggest-spending Formula 1 teams—namely Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull—are bracing for staff reductions as F1 enters a budget cap era in 2021, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is hoping for a little pandemic relief to the plan.

F1 teams have agreed to a $145 million budget cap for 2021. That cap is a soft cap in that many expenses are not factored into the cap, including drivers marketing costs, driver salaries and the costs of the team's three highest paid personnel. Still, the sports "Big Three" are believed to be spending more than $400 million annually on their programs.
