Federal prison staffing shortages lead to $300 million in overtime pay

Federal prison staffers logged 6.7 million overtime hours in 2019 at a cost of more than $300 million, highlighting chronic officer shortages across the system, the Justice Department's inspector general found.

Corrections officers accounted for at least 70% of the extra hours, according to the report that acknowledged long-standing staffing gaps that have thrust teachers, nurses and kitchen workers into patrol assignments in inmate housing units and recreation yards.

Senators voted 22-8, with most Republicans voting 'yes' and all Democrats voting 'no,' to approve Senate Bill 243 .

The bill exempts from overtime pay "tasks that are preliminary or postliminary to the principal activity that the employee is employed to perform," according to an analysis by the Legislative Service Commission, the legislature's nonpartisan research arm. These include "de minimis time spent checking scheduled assignments, work locations, electronic mail messages, voice messages, or calendars."

Explained | New Labour Code: Will Revised Rules For Overtime Pay Benefit Employees?

In the monsoon session of 2019, the government passed the Code on Wages. The code consolidates four laws relating to wages and bonus, namely - Payment of Wages Act, 1936, Minimum Wages Act, 1948, Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 and Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.

The code also stipulates the compensation for overtime work should be at least twice the employee's regular pay.

In the draft rules issued by the labour ministry in the month of November, it notified the working hours can be extended up to 12 working hours a day higher than 9 allowed earlier under the Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions.

SEATTLE (AP) — A divided Washington Supreme Court ruled Nov. 5 the state’s dairy workers are entitled to overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours a week, a decision expected to apply to the rest of the agriculture industry.

For the past 60 years, state law — like federal law — has exempted farmworkers from classes of workers who are entitled to overtime pay, but in a 5-4 ruling the court found that unconstitutional.

The majority said the Washington state Constitution grants workers in dangerous industries a fundamental right to health and safety protections, including overtime, which is intended to discourage employers from forcing employees to work excessive hours.

Beaver Creek workers sue Vail Resorts in wage dispute – Longmont Times-Call

A trio of Beaver Creek Ski Resort employees are suing owner Vail Resorts in a wage dispute that alleges the Broomfield-based resort operator has engaged in a pattern of withholding wages and overtime pay.

Plaintiffs Randy Quint, John Linn, and Mark Molina are asking the U.S. District Court in Denver to certify a class action suit for all of Vail's similarly situated seasonal employees across its portfolio of resorts. The suit claims the firm doesn't compensate workers for their time traveling on company transportation to and from resorts, or for the time it takes to put on and remove company-mandated gear and for training.

Wage gap: Highest-paid workers see pay rise much faster

The rich aren't just getting richer. They're getting there faster than the rest of America's workers.

"It's a clear story of disempowerment of workers," said Lawrence Mishel, co-author of the study and a distinguished fellow at EPI.

Executives at hedge funds and other top finance companies have benefited from outsized leaps in compensation, often tied to stock prices, while the vast majority of workers, including both blue- and white-collar workers, have seen their pay stagnate or climb slowly, Mishel said. He cited myriad reasons, including outdated overtime pay rules and the misclassification of many full-time employees as contractors.
