New Cybersecurity Regulations Are Coming. Here’s How to Prepare.

A whole suite of new cybersecurity regulations and enforcement are in the offing, both at the state and federal level in the U.S. and around the world. Companies don’t need to just sit by and wait for the rules to be written and then implemented, however.

Cybersecurity has reached a tipping point. After decades of private-sector organizations more or less being left to deal with cyber incidents on their own, the scale and impact of cyberattacks means that the fallout from these incidents can ripple across societies and borders.

The public claimed that local regulators were spreading crypto-positive sentiments while simultaneously threatening more regulations. According to the new statement from Menon, the observation is not entirely wrong. He says the agency needs to do "a better job explaining" the situation.

Powell Must Reinforce His Words With Actions - The Washington Post

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has finally delivered his message loud and clear: To get inflation under control, the central bank intends to push interest rates higher, and keep them there longer, than markets had expected.

So what comes next? Words must lead to actions. For one, the Fed's next set of economic projections need to reflect reality.

Economics in the new age of national security | Jordan Times

ABIDJAN — The global economy has entered a new age of national security. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability caused by overreliance on global supply chains and the failure of coordination in tackling global health risks.

Beyond its human and economic toll, the war in Ukraine has sharply increased the divisions between the Western and Eastern geopolitical blocs centred around the United States and China, respectively.

Opinion | Wonking Out: Europe and the Economics of Blackmail - The New York Times

Anyway, I spent most of my time in the office, crunching numbers. I did, however, sit in on a few cabinet-level meetings, and I recall in particular one involving European plans to build a pipeline that would greatly increase gas imports from the Soviet Union.

But those officials weren't wrong to worry that dependence on Soviet — later Russian — gas would create strategic vulnerability. Indeed, Europe's dependence on Russian gas has arguably become the biggest risk now facing the world economy.

Tame Your Taxes: Tax theory, history and regulatory overreach, part 3

Taxes rarely make the news, but hiring 87,000 new IRS employees is likely to affect you. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA 22) became law on Aug. 16. Inflation is worse than it has been in 40 years, but the additional spending authorized by IRA 22 will only accelerate inflation.

To this end, $80 billion to hire 87,000 new IRS employees means more people will be audited. Several of my clients still have not had their 2020 tax returns processed nor have they received their refunds. By their actions, the IRS leadership has revealed their priorities.

lawrence diggs column taxes and what we are willing to pay

Should we have taxes? What should they be used for? Who should pay them and how much should they pay? These are important issues for many of us.

The conversations I hear about taxes seem to focus mostly on cost and very little on benefit. It is probably because we humans are averse to losing anything, and taxes are experienced mostly as cost.

Almost All Freelancers Are Overpaying Taxes. Are You?

All freelancers must pay federal income taxes. Your tax rate will vary based on your income bracket. These brackets differ for single filers, joint filers and heads of household. Below are the 2022 federal income tax rates for single filers based on income.

Notably, each portion of your income is taxed at the above rates. For example, if you earn $75,000 in 2022 as a freelancer, you'll pay 10% on the first $10,275 of your income. You'll then pay 12% on the next $41,775 minus that first $10,275, which would be $31,500 of your income.
