W hen Form 1040 debuted in 1914, the filing instructions were one page long. Today, they run 108 pages, not counting instructions for the more than 50 related forms and schedules. There are now seven tax brackets and five filing statuses, and the only constant about the tax code is change.

Given all that, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Here are five tips to help reduce tax filing stress and to minimize the chance of future problems with the Internal Revenue Service.

Rent money returned to couple after teen finds $1,200 in parking lot of Kroger

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A worker at the Commerce Township Kroger made a discovery in the parking lot that led to an emotional thank you from a local couple.

Mike Mitchell, 19, was collecting carts at the store on Union Lake Road when he found an envelope on the ground. He opened it and found $1,200 inside.

Mitchell brought the money to Willie Thomas, who was working at the customer service desk. There was a couple's name on the envelope, but Thomas couldn't find contact information for them.

OER Can Save Colleges Money, Too

A new study shows that open educational resources can help students save money, which encourages them to enroll in more classes.

The report details the results of the Open Educational Resources Degree Initiative from Achieving the Dream, a network of 277 community colleges committed to student success.

Over three years, 38 colleges across 13 states offered 6,600 OER course sections. Nearly 600 courses were redesigned to use OERs. According to Achieving the Dream, it's the largest study of how using OERs impacts colleges.
