York City Council moves on new budgeting software

York City Council on Wednesday unanimously advanced a resolution to buy new budgeting software, as the city continues to struggle under the existing software's shortcomings.

The resolution would allow the city to enter into a three-year contract with Silicon Valley-based OpenGov, a private software company specializing in finances. The contract would cost $58,000 for the first year and $38,000 the final two years.

"We believe that this is a good fit for the city of York," said Tom Ray, director of business administration.

How a Mega-IPO Could Help Plug India's Budget Deficit - The Washington Post

That's unclear. The government has yet to say what size minority stake it will sell. Plus, the company's total value is hard to quantify. It holds 32 trillion rupees ($447 billion) of assets, more than the combined holdings of all India's mutual funds. But it's never disclosed its so-called embedded value, the key financial gauge for insurers, which combines the current value of future profits with the accumulated value of funds belonging to shareholders.

The IPO is the biggest chunk of the government's plan to raise 2.1 trillion rupees ($29 billion) by selling assets. The money would be used to narrow India's budget deficit, which is forecast to be 3.8% this year. The government plan includes offering majority stakes in three other state-run firms -- Bharat Petroleum Corp., Shipping Corp. of India and Container Corp. of India.

N.J. governor to propose new fees for companies whose workers rely on Medicaid

Gov. Phil Murphy wants businesses to cover a bigger portion of New Jersey's health-care bill when their employees receive Medicaid benefits from the state.

Murphy's $40.85 billion budget proposal is expected to include nearly $4.7 billion to fund Medicaid coverage for more than 1.6 million people.

The "corporate responsibility fee" would generate an estimated $180 million — about six times the amount of a similar proposal Murphy put forward last year, but that wasn't enacted in the final budget.

FEATURE: Why manufacturers want these 3 things included in the spring budget

On 12 December 2019, and then again on 31 January 2020, some of that uncertainty slipped away. That was the feeling, at least, at this year’s National Manufacturing Conference on Tuesday (25 February), where keynote speakers and businesses excitedly looked to the future following the Conservatives’ resounding win and the UK eventually leaving the European Union last month.

While there was a sense of cautious optimism at the QE II conference centre in Westminster, event organiser Make UK made it clear that now is the time for action, not celebration. The manufacturers’ organisation highlighted low levels of private sector investment and poor productivity, which chief executive Stephen Phipson said were partly down to poor level of capital allowances compared to other countries and the inclusion of capital investment in the calculation of business rates.
