How much overtime can farmworkers get in New York? - News - The Evening Tribune - Hornell, NY

ALBANY — The state wage board that is charged with assessing whether the new farm labor law’s threshold for overtime pay can be lowered will hold the first of five hearings Friday in Albany.

The new law, which took effect Jan. 1, requires farmers to pay their workers time-and-a-half after 60 hours and requires the wage board to evaluate if the threshold should be reduced in the future.

The initial drafts of the law called for overtime after 40 hours, so the creation of the wage board to review the law was a compromise between lawmakers and Gov. Andrew Cuomo last year.

Hamden’s former mayor promised to rein in New Haven police and firefighter overtime costs in part by modernizing and automating the way extra-duty shifts are assigned.

Jackson has served as the city’s acting chief administrative officer since January, when Mayor Justin Elicker first came into office.

A February 2020 jury verdict against county music star Martina McBride’s production company highlights – albeit indirectly – the perils of unpaid internship programs and the issues they can cause under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Martina McBride and her husband, John, own Blackbird Studios, which hired Richard Hanson as its operations manager in 2012. According to the decision from the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, in 2013 Hanson began overseeing Blackbird’s unpaid internship program and supervised paid assistant engineers.

San Diego City Attorney Candidate Cory Briggs on InstaCart injunction and AB 5 -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The city of San Diego obtained a preliminary injunction Tuesday against grocery delivery company Instacart, in the wake of a judge’s ruling that the company misclassified its employees as independent contractors.

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Timothy Taylor’s ruling stems from a lawsuit brought by San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott, who alleged Instacart was evading providing its “shoppers” with worker protections like minimum wage and overtime pay by classifying them as independent contractors rather than employees.

Nationwide Employees Win Class Status on Wage, Leave Claims

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company must face a newly-certified class of more than 100 employees in California who say they weren't paid overtime or for all accrued and vested vacation time.

Two subclasses of Nationwide commercial claims adjusters were certified Wednesday on their state-law claims by Judge John A. Mendez of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, following a Feb. 25 hearing.

Common factual and legal questions predominate over individual issues, and the class can prove their claims by showing evidence of Nationwide's common policies, practices, rules, and regulations, the court said. Named plaintiffs Anthony Marc Mostajo...
