Salamanca school budget prep predicts no increase in tax levy | News | oleantimesherald.com

SALAMANCA — A budget with no increase in the tax levy could be up for approval by voters in the Salamanca City Central School District this May.

Karen Magara, assistant superintendent for business and finance, presented to the Board of Education Tuesday preliminary figures for the 2020-21 district budget in advance of its first complete preview March 25.

For taxpayers, the levy is expected to remain flat at $250,000, which it has been since 2017. This steady levy is a significant drop from the $3.42 million tax levy in 2013, a roughly 92 percent reduction over four years.

The truth about budget surpluses: it's revenue, not spending, that counts | Greg Jericho |

The history of the budget since the 1990 recession is a story of revenue, and has barely anything at all to do with "management".

Since 1990 every single one of the 10 years the budget has been in surplus or balance, government revenue was 24.5% of GDP or higher. And every year when revenue has been lower than that amount, the budget has been in deficit.

We truly spend too much time worrying about the budget balance. Most of the commentary on the budget implies that the government is somehow in control of all the factors that determine whether a surplus or deficit is delivered.

'Invisible Man' on track for box-office hit, revives Universal monster - Business

"The Invisible Man," which debuted in theaters on Friday, is the latest monster movie from Universal Pictures, which attempted to launch its own cinematic universe of classic monsters in 2017 with "The Mummy."

"The Mummy" disappointed at the box office, raking in $80 million domestically and $409 million worldwide off of a $125 million budget before marketing costs. It put an early end to Universal's initial Dark Universe plans.

"I think it probably was trying to come together too quickly," Chris Morgan, a "Mummy" producer and would-be architect of the potential franchise, told io9 last year. "And I think everyone got to take a breath and take a step back and take a look at it, and now just focus on maybe doing it a little bit slower."

While you're here, how about this:

This is how much to pay yourself as a business owner

Although they had one client, a local brewery, it was far from certain whether this venture would work out or if he'd ever earn the kind of money he was used to making again.

Still, he couldn't resist the entrepreneurial pull. "We saw there was an opportunity to work with a certain caliber of client, but without the outdated structure that most agencies exist within," he says. "And I'd rather be doing something entrepreneurial and see where it goes and how it grows than be nice and comfortable with nothing to show for yourself."

Western Canada: Alberta budget bets on oil to bring province out of economic slump - The Globe

Alberta's United Conservative Party government delivered a budget this week that defied expectations and painted a relatively optimistic picture for the province in the coming years.

There were plenty of signs before the budget that the province's fortunes had taken a turn. Oil prices have been on a steady downward slide and several banks and outside analysts had downgraded their projections for the province's economic growth. Unemployment has been hovering above 7 per cent – around where it's been for two stubborn years.
