TSA freezes hiring and overtime pay as spring break travel season nears

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Over the next two months, thousands of people will be planning spring break trips -- but there might be a snag that could have travelers waiting in the security line a lot longer than normal.

Channel 9 learned there could be fewer TSA agents on duty to get airline passengers through security at airports across the country.

During the next few weeks, as more families travel for spring break, lines can get very long, extending the wait to get through security. To make matters worse, the Washington Post is reporting the TSA has temporarily frozen hiring and overtime pay.

BART employee reportedly made over $172K in overtime, bringing total pay to more than $279K -

In 2016, we reported that some BART workers were nearly tripling their salary with overtime pay. According to new data recently obtained by ABC7 , things haven’t changed much.

The news station analyzed the 2018 compensation for all BART employees and found that a BART senior police officer made more than $172,000 in overtime that year, making their total pay more than $279,000.

Another employee, a station agent, worked 361 out of 365 days at more than 40 different stations, making more than $114,000 in overtime. Combined with regular pay, the station agent made nearly $200,000. This prompted ABC7 to question the safety of this level of work.

Guest Opinion: Moderate minimum wage hikes don’t impact employment - Opinion - The

Eight Nobel prize-winners were among the 600 economists who explained in a 2014 letter to Congress, “The effect of increasing the minimum wage on employment is probably the most studied topic in labor economics, and the consensus of the literature is that moderate increases in the minimum wage has little or no negative effect on employment.”

States offering higher wages experience larger, more qualified, and reliable employee pools. Employers in those states pay less cost for recruiting, retraining and overtime. According to Pennsylvania’s Independent Fiscal Office, if the state raised its minimum wage to $12, the state budget would gain $170 million, owing to taxes paid by low wage workers and reduced public assistance.

INSIGHT: What Employers Should Know About the New Overtime Rate Regulations

The Labor Department's recent revisions to regular rate calculations may have employers considering changing their overtime calculations. Liebert Cassidy Whitmore attorneys say employers can move forward with making changes, but recommend consulting with legal counsel to follow the new guidance carefully. They examine the changes and give advice on compliance.

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, employers are required to pay overtime to non-exempt employees at one-and-one-half times the employee's "regular rate of pay" for all time worked in excess of 40 hours in a workweek. The regular rate is not necessarily the same as the employee's normal hourly rate. Rather, it is calculated as an hourly equivalent of the total amount paid to employees for their work.

Spotlight News – In Colonie, OT goes to public safety

COLONIE — In 2019, the town spent nearly $600,000 more than it budgeted for overtime with the vast majority of that being spent on public safety.

Formulating a municipal budget is not an exact science and the cost of everything in any given year is estimated based on the prior year. Overtime is particularly difficult to estimate because it is the most susceptible to unpredictable variables such as criminal occurrences, emergency calls and snow storms.

[ LETTERS ] - Taipei Times

On Wednesday last week, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics released year-end salaries data for last year.

Basic salaries — that is net of bonuses and overtime pay — on average rose by 2.26 percent to NT$41,883.

It was also the first time in 18 years that salaries have grown by more than 2 percent for two consecutive years.

Increases in orders, investment and production levels have resulted in higher profits, and businesses are sharing the proceeds of this economic growth with their workforces.
