ALBANY – The state wage board that is charged with assessing whether the new farm labor law's threshold for overtime pay can be lowered will hold the first of five hearings Friday in Albany.
The new law, which took effect Jan. 1 , requires farmers to pay their workers time-and-a-half after 60 hours and requires the wage board to evaluate if the threshold should be reduced in the future.
The initial drafts of the law called for overtime after 40 hours, so the creation of the wage board to review the law was a compromise between lawmakers and Gov. Andrew Cuomo last year.

Denise Williams, a security training assistant at the Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center in Manhattan, spent 41 percent of last year working overtime. The additional work — 3,600 hours — earned her $231,000 in extra pay. Her regular salary is $91,000.
It’s nothing new. New York state has a terrible track record when it comes to dishing out overtime. Last year was the second year in a row Williams topped the OT earners list, records obtained by the USA TODAY Network New York show. In 2018, she logged 3,560 hours of overtime, or $200,000 in additional pay.

A wage board that could change overtime rules for farmers will hold a public hearing in Batavia in April.
Roberta Reardon, state labor commissioner, recently announced the members of the wage board: David Fisher, state Farm Bureau president; Denis Hughes, former New York State AFL-CIO president; and Brenda McDuffie, president of the Buffalo Urban League. Under the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act, which Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law last year, farm laborers are entitled to overtime premium pay starting Jan.
Suffolk DA Refused To Prosecute Library Janitors For Alleged Overtime Theft
The Suffolk County district attorney refused two years ago to prosecute Boston Public Library janitors for collecting overtime for hours they didn't work because the DA said library officials had known about the scheme for years and let it continue, according to newly uncovered records.
WGBH News' New England Center for Investigative Reporting first reported in 2018 that library custodians were routinely paid full eight-hour overtime shifts for cleaning up after private events at the central library, even if they only worked a few hours.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Union workers at HealthPartners say they’ve approved a tentative agreement with “a strong majority,” after 15 hours of voting.
The deal effects 1,800 workers, including doctors, RNs, dental hygienists, LPNs, CMAs and physician assistants. They work at more than 30 HealthPartners clinics across the Twin Cities.
The agreement came after the workers had voted to authorize a 7-day strike . They were ready to walk off of their jobs, until a new agreement was reached with their employer following 17 hours of negotiations.

MARTINSBURG — A Berkeley County judge ruled in favor of 36 City of Martinsburg firefighters in a civil lawsuit filed against the city.
The lawsuit alleges current and now-retired firefighters were not properly compensated for holiday pay or overtime over a period of years and received retaliation from the city for their claims.
Twenty-third Judicial Circuit Court Judge Laura Faircloth presided over the hearing Tuesday, where she ruled in favor of the firefighters on one claim of the suit, stating firefighters must be paid the time and a half for the hours worked or be given 24 hours off in the future.

New York law now requires that farmworkers get paid overtime when they work more than 60 hours in a week.
That new law, which went into effect in January, is part of historic legislation Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed last summer. In addition to overtime, the new rules also allow farmworkers the right to unionize and take at least one day off per week.
That 60-hour threshold for overtime could shrink going forward. Originally supporters of the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act had fought for overtime wages after 40 hours worked in a week. In the end, a compromise was struck at the 60-hour limit.
