Why a Coronavirus Recession Would Be So Hard to Contain - The New York Times

Why a Coronavirus Recession Would Be So Hard to Contain - The New York Times

It looks more and more likely that the novel form of coronavirus will do meaningful economic damage to the United States. Stock and bond prices already suggest that the outbreak could halt the longest expansion on record and even send the nation into recession.

The risks loom larger because this particular crisis is ill suited to the usual tools the government has to stabilize the economy. If a recession happens, it will probably be a result of this poor fit between the economic effects of the potential pandemic and the mechanisms the government uses to try to keep the economy growing.

Germany Has Means to Respond if Coronavirus Sparks Economic Crisis: Finance Minister - The New

BERLIN — Germany would be in a position to enact a fiscal stimulus package should the coronavirus spark a global economic crisis, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said in remarks published on Sunday.

The spread of the virus has raised fears of a pandemic. In Germany there have been 66 confirmed cases, and a government crisis committee on Friday widened cross-border travel guidelines and canceled major international events.

The German economy, Europe's biggest, has been weakening as its export-oriented manufacturers languish in a recession. There are fears the coronavirus outbreak could sink Germany into a recession, given the economy's reliance on exports and Chinese supply chains.

Economist: Dallas-Fort Worth economy highly susceptible to coronavirus pains | wfaa.com

It's too soon to know the costs and consequences of the coronavirus on the national, state and Dallas-Fort Worth economy, but North Texas won't escape pain-free, a top economist said Thursday in Southlake.

The virus' effects on the economy could be minimal or could stall global growth as companies take a wait-and-see attitude, putting projects, production and expansion on hold, Ray Perryman, president and CEO of Waco-based of The Perryman Group, told business leaders at a Southlake Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

The new-old threat to economic freedom | Jordan Times

These obstacles were common in the 1950s and 1960s, when socialism was creeping up everywhere. Many tried to stop the trend, and many were successful. But the same obstacles are now reappearing. For example, there are renewed calls for such things as occupational licensing, restrictions on wage and price setting or government interventions in both domestic and international trade and finance.

Even the Business Roundtable is weighing in, announcing last August that US corporations share "a fundamental commitment to all of our stakeholders", including customers, employees, suppliers, communities and, last on the list, shareholders.

Free exchange - How to get more innovation bang for the research buck | Finance and economics |

A BOUT A DECADE ago, a few economists began asking whether the rich world's prolonged spell of lacklustre growth might have something to do with a shortage of new ideas. Tyler Cowen of George Mason University suggested that when it came to discovery, humanity may well have plucked all of the low-hanging fruit. Robert Gordon of Northwestern University scoffed at recent technological contributions, noting that none was nearly as important to human welfare as the humble toilet.

Humans, though, have mistakenly believed their understanding of the universe to be complete many times before. In a new paper by Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford University and Mikko Packalen of the University of Waterloo, the authors quote the Nobel-winning physicist Albert Michelson, who, in a speech in 1894, reckoned that "the more important fundamental laws and facts of physical science have all been discovered".

Malawi legalises cannabis amid hopes of fresh economic growth | Global development | The Guardian

"We don't want to replicate what has happened in the tobacco industry. Malawians should participate, not as tenants, but as equal partners in this new sector," added Kadzamira, who wants cannabis products to be processed in-country.

"There will be lots of people interested and looking at Malawi at the moment, but the next step is to make its investment climate favourable and positive," said Clarke.

She added that she hopes the medicinal cannabis industry, which is less accessible to local entrepreneurs, will "bring foreign currency and exchange to the country, and that [it] should be done responsibly".

Clarke said government consultations during the drafting of the bill were inclusive, paving the way for the industry to "open a lot of doors for lots of different kinds of people here", and stressed the importance of traditional farmers and growers being involved.
