Provincial budget targets business, including those in Cape Breton | Provincial | News | The

A retired economist questions whether measures aimed at businesses in the provincial budget will achieve their intended objective of helping Nova Scotia companies become more competitive and reinvest in their businesses.

Among the measures announced in the budget Tuesday by Finance Minister Karen Casey was $70.5 million to reduce the corporate tax rate by two per cent to 14 per cent. It also included $10.5 million to reduce the small business tax from three per cent to 2.5 per cent, savings which helps companies invest back into their businesses and employees.

Review: Low-budget film lacks imagination | The Ithacan

Even before "Fantasy Island" begins, the movie is trying to scare you. The Columbia Pictures logo is accompanied by a melodramatic score and the echoes of an elevator door opening. This proves to be the movie's most effective scare tactic, as it only gets more disappointing from there. Released by the prolific Blumhouse Productions, "Fantasy Island" is another heartless product filled with unlikable characters, tensionless action and a convoluted plot.

Blumhouse Productions is a curious company. Built on a production model of low budgets and generous creative freedom for its directors, the company has been behind some of the biggest movies in recent memory. Its releases range from ultra-cheap horror blockbusters like the "Paranormal Activity" series to Oscar winners like "Get Out" and "BlacKkKlansman," which had the largest budget of the three. Its latest release, "Fantasy Island," falls firmly into the former category.

The chancellor could use the Budget to help both startups and investors : CityAM

Ahead of any Budget, there is always great speculation on what may be announced. This year, the focus thus far has been on when a Budget would happen and who will deliver it.

But with the new chancellor Rishi Sunak confirming that it will go ahead on 11 March, all attention has turned to the content.

This relief allows entrepreneurs to pay less capital gains tax when they sell all or part of their business. It is an important incentive for later-stage business owners, and we would certainly caution against scaling it back — more so than ever given the importance of sending the message that the UK is open for business post-Brexit.

Budget 2020: Mboweni's Tough Juggling Act - SAPeople - Your Worldwide South African Community

Amid South Africa's precarious economic state, economists, in anticipation of the Budget, say Mboweni has the unenviable task of extricating the country from its dire economic straits.

Consumers, the economists say, should brace themselves for extra tax on personal and company income taxes, while a VAT hike could possibly be on the cards.

In what he describes as a "do or die" 2020/21 Budget, Old Mutual Investment Group Chief Economist Johann Els said: "While VAT was increased to 15% in February 2018 and was then left untouched last year, another VAT rate increase cannot be ruled out in the face of mounting pressure to address widening deficits and climbing debt-to-GDP ratio."
