Cutting pensions tax relief to 20% from 40% for high earners is a controversial measure at Sunak's disposal. Under current rules, workers get the same relief on pension contributions as their income tax rate (a higher rate taxpayer paying 40% will get a 40% relief on pension contributions). Slashing the relief to 20% could give the Treasury an extra £11 billion but the idea is politically fraught.

As its debt burden grows at an alarming rate, government plans to slash its own spending instead of hitting embattled South Africans with more taxes.
The total government debt burden now equals almost 66% of South Africa’s total economy – and repayments on this debt is growing by more than 12% a year.
But while its income is under pressure, government is spending much more, including R112 billion to keep Eskom afloat over the next three years, R16 billion to settle SAA’s debts, and to fund free university places.

AMSTERDAM — KLM, the Dutch arm of Air France KLM, joined Germany's Lufthansa on Wednesday in making budget cuts in response to a slowdown in business resulting from the coronavirus outbreak.
KLM will cut back on hiring new staff and external consultants, delay new IT projects and office refurbishment plans and reduce travel expenses significantly, Chief Financial Officer Erik Swelheim said in an internal letter to management.
"The impact on KLM's revenues will be very significant and will only partly be mitigated by lower costs and a lower fuel price," Swelheim said in reference to the coronavirus.

A retired economist questions whether measures aimed at businesses in the provincial budget will achieve their intended objective of helping Nova Scotia companies become more competitive and reinvest in their businesses.
Among the measures announced in the budget Tuesday by Finance Minister Karen Casey was $70.5 million to reduce the corporate tax rate by two per cent to 14 per cent. It also included $10.5 million to reduce the small business tax from three per cent to 2.5 per cent, savings which helps companies invest back into their businesses and employees.
