Final Opportunity Zone Rules Could Raise Tax Break’s Cost | Common Dreams Views

We've seen similar dynamics play out in other areas of the 2017 tax law, with lobbyists using the regulatory process to secure significant new tax breaks that mainly benefit multinational corporations and very affluent owners of certain kinds of businesses.

In finalizing its regulations on the 2017 tax law's "opportunity zones," the Treasury Department took some questionable business giveaways that were included in its proposed regulations and actually expanded them.

Buttigieg, Sanders take the lead in Iowa - POLITICO

— The #IowaCaucusDisaster on Monday night could be bad news for ethanol. The biofuel sector has long held outsized sway in presidential politics, but that power could be in jeopardy now that people are seriously rethinking Iowa's spot at the front of the primary line.

— Farmer optimism jumped 11 percent in January as the new U.S.-China trade deal fueled high hopes for an uptick in agricultural exports, according to a monthly industry survey. But the White House is now cautioning that the "export boom" could be delayed because of the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China.

Supreme Court Ruling on Sales Taxes Opens Door to New Billions via Tech

There are about 12,000 sales taxes in the nation. And thanks to the Supreme Court decision in the 2018 case, South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., businesses that sell products outside of their home state now have a greater responsibility to keep up with all of those different taxes.

Before the Supreme Court ruling, businesses only had to collect sales tax for out-of-state sales if they had a physical presence in the state where the purchase was made. That changed radically when SCOTUS removed the physical-presence requirement, and states established rules around the collection of remote online sales taxes in order to capitalize on the case’s implications.
