FASB clarifies callable debt securities accounting - Journal of Accountancy

FASB issued rules amendments Thursday to clarify an entity's accounting responsibilities related to callable debt securities.

Accounting Standards Update (ASU) No. 2020-08 , Codification Improvements to Subtopic 310-20, Receivables — Nonrefundable Fees and Other Costs , states that an entity should reevaluate whether a callable debt security is within the scope of Paragraph 310-20-35-33 for each reporting period.

Adviser highlights 'accounting irregularities' at GP Global | Accounting Today

Troubled commodities trader GP Global Group has "accounting irregularities" in its books, according to the restructuring adviser hired to salvage the company's assets.

In a presentation seen by Bloomberg News, FTI Consulting warned that unsecured lenders in the holding company for the group could expect to recover between 0 percent and 27.5 percent of their debts.

Lenders have more than $1 billion in exposure to the company, Bloomberg reported earlier this month, citing people with knowledge of the situation. Known as Gulf Petrochem Group until 2018, GP Global said in July it was restructuring its finances after lenders withdrew credit lines.

The American Institute of CPAs, with partner groups, has released guidelines to help finance chiefs as they manage non-accounting experts to help with valuations, other disrupted work.

Firms are hiring, or wondering if they should hire, more specialists outside of accounting or auditing to assist accountants during the pandemic. This is raising issues for CFOs, an American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) report says.

Someone has to make sure all those dollar signs line up, and accounting clerks have just the know-how to ensure the money gets where it needs to go. Accounting clerks help make sure bills (and employees) are paid and keep the wheels of a business moving.

Depending on the size of the company and the level of experience a clerk has, accounting clerks can take on numerous tasks. “After completing the accounting specialist certification, students would be ready to work as an accounting assistant or an accounting clerk,” said Ellen Orr, Seminole State College of Florida program manager of administrative office management . “They will be able to prepare payroll time sheets, paychecks, help with bank reconciliations and more.
