Mental accounting is impacting sustainable behavior

The spillover effect refers to the fact that we tend to justify one behavior by another of our behaviors. "Someone who makes the effort to cycle to work every day will use this argument to justify, to himself or others, buying a plane ticket to go on holiday to the Seychelles. A possible intervention strategy to prevent this is to encourage people to create differentiated mental accounts using targeted messages," states the psychologist.

The rebound effect explains how actions can induce a negative energy balance when people fail to adapt their budgets to a new situation. For example, people who buy an energy-efficient car may feel inclined to use it more often, canceling out potential energy savings. To tackle this phenomenon, the psychologists suggest informing people about the real energy costs of their new car so they can update their consumption budget.

Quite a lot has been going on:

What is Between Accounting and Sustainability

When many people think of sustainability, they think of the environment and pollution. Sustainability has evolved and currently has a much broader definition that also includes economic and societal concerns. Several Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) frameworks measure more than traditional financial reporting. Leveraging these frameworks can give a more transparent look into a company's health, which provides insights into future returns and risk.

The turn towards corporate social responsibility may have started as a moral one. However, the economic arguments are starting to speak louder and accounting firms are uniquely positioned to support this growing interest.

Art of Accounting: Added services by accounting firms | Accounting Today

I've been there. Before our firm merged with Withum, we promoted an imposing array of services and actually had clients in each specialty or niche. Sometimes just one or two. We were a small practice that prided ourselves on being able to do "everything." However, we were always too busy to promote any one niche the way it should have been.

Being a part of Withum these past 15 years, I've watched them grow and expand, particularly in niche and specialty areas and big time into advisory services. When we merged in, we had a single client in a niche area that the Withum partners mentioned that they thought could be expanded greatly with a larger firm. About six months after the merger, I asked Bill Hagaman, now our managing partner/CEO, why nothing had been done to expand it.
