Lloyd Blankfein sees `bubble elements’ in markets thanks to 'free' money

Former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein sees speculative elements across markets for stocks and bonds.

"Money is close to a free commodity," Blankfein said. "And when something is free, you tend not to husband it, you tend to overuse it like it's a free good."

Blankfein was responding to a question from CNBC's Joe Kernen, who asked if he saw "red flags" in markets. Despite a pandemic that has slammed the brakes on global economic growth and forced more than 30 million Americans to seek unemployment benefits, U.S. equity indexes are still near all-time highs. The market rebounded strongly after central banks and lawmakers unleashed a torrent of support for markets, households and businesses.

State stops taking money from inmates who owe restitution | Las Vegas Review-Journal

“Marsy’s Law doesn’t actually require what they’re doing,” Shepack said.

Before September, the department took a small percentage from family deposits for court fees or extenuating medical costs, or to pay for property if the prisoner damaged it while incarcerated, he said.

But after Sept. 1, up to 80 percent of funds sent to prisoners were being seized by the state for restitution, Shepack said. So if families wanted to pay for basic hygiene products or supplemental food, they needed to send significantly more money to account for the funds that were taken.

Nevada suspends policy raiding inmates accounts, taking 80 percent of money | Nevada Current

The action comes after the Nevada Current spoke with multiple families and inmates in September about the toll the exorbitant deduction has taken.

Inmates rely on the money sent from their families — many who often don't have much to spare as it is — to buy food from the commissary, pay for medical needs or obtain hygiene items.

"It returns back to the status quo," Welborn said. "We need to have these conversations with our leadership — the Nevada Department of Corrections, the Governor's office, the ACLU and the defense bar. We all have expertise and knowledge on how Marsy's Law should be implemented and this is not it. This is not what was anticipated by the proponents of Marsy's Law.
