Public teachers employed by the Jefferson County Board of Education are not exempt from paying occupational taxes levied by the City of Irondale, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled Friday.
In 2018 the city enacted a municipal ordinance creating a 1 percent occupational tax. The suit, brought by the board, aimed to prevent the tax from causing differences in teacher salaries across the county, said Attorney for the board Carl Johnson.
