GOWANDA — Carter Benton, a 2016 Gowanda graduate, has started his own business. Johnnie’s Blankets is an online shop that sells blankets while also helping those less fortunate.
Benton started the business this year in a class in the VentureWorks Entrepreneurship Program with Steve Brookstein at the State University of New York at Geneseo.
Benton’s major at Geneseo is business administration with a marketing minor. He recently turned 22. He was a three-sport athlete, playing baseball, basketball, and football, but he enjoys playing any recreational sport there is. He enjoys being outdoors and loves that he grew up near Zoar Valley where there’s plenty of places to hike and raft. Recently, he has found intramural broomball to be a favorite whilst in college.

"What we wanted to do was put a place online where those businesses could be found by the greater community," Damon Rawls said.
Rawls is one of the people behind the project. He said the goal is to connect businesses with the broader community. The directory features businesses like Tanika Harper's, who started Harper's Naturals six years ago.

Sacramento Business Journal: Disparity In Bank Lending To Black Business Owners -
The Sacramento Business Journal released a special issue this week on the decline in bank lending to Black-owned businesses over the past decade.
An analysis in collaboration with the Portland Business Journal found that there has been an 84% national decline in lending to Black business owners since 2007 under the Small Business Administration’s small business lending program.
When they compared the 10 largest majority-white census tracts to the 10 largest majority person-of-color tracts, they found that in white neighborhoods like Galt, Antelope, and North Highlands, business owners received $254.67 vs. $153.72 in people-of-color neighborhoods like parts of Elk Grove, Meadowview and North Sacramento.

An open house was held Oct. 9 to celebrate the opening and introduce community members to the businesses, which include six businesses operating in two buildings near the intersection of Main Street and Fernwood Road and once occupied by the Jefferson County Genealogy Society and a dance school.
