As reported by the Globe's Matt Rocheleau and Dugan Arnett , the average pay for police department employees last year was $127,094, which includes nearly $30,000 in overtime and $20,000 in paid details, which are assignments paid for by private entities like utility companies and event sponsors. Meanwhile, as they report, the police payroll has jumped dramatically over the past decade, increasing by $125 million — or 43 percent — since 2011.

Superintendent stands by decision to pay $300K to employees while schools were closed
PLAQUEMINE- Iberville Parish School Superintendent Arthur Joffrion is finally answering questions about nearly $300,000 in additional compensation the school district paid to employees while schools were closed for the pandemic.
Joffrion said Tuesday over the phone the money was well spent and the majority of it went to incentivize employees who helped keep the children fed while schools were closed. Joffrion said he stands behind his decision and would do it again.

Neville Gafa’ has won a legal battle to keep more than €6,500 in "extra" overtime payments after a court threw out the health authorities request for a refund on a legal technicality.
The case was filed in 2017 by the Health Parliamentary Secretary and Chief Medical Officer in an attempt to regain more than €6,500 that was paid to Gafa', while he was a project manager at the Foundation for Medical Services.
He was employed on a 'person of trust' basis and government rules on employment contracts stipulate that 'persons of trust' are not entitled to overtime payments.

The Labor Department plans to issue new guidance to answer employer questions about how wage-and-hour laws apply when reopening workplaces after Covid-19-related closures, while also bolstering enforcement by hiring new investigators.

The US Department of Labor (DOL) published a Final Rule on June 8 confirming that paying bonuses, commissions, and other incentive-based pay to salaried, nonexempt employees does not disqualify employers from using the fluctuating workweek (FWW) method of calculating overtime pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Under the FWW method, the employee’s salary compensates for all hours worked regardless of how many. Thus, the overtime premium for the salary component of pay is the weekly salary divided by all hours worked in the workweek multiplied by 0.5. Prior to issuing the Final Rule, there was uncertainty as to the DOL’s position with regard to whether providing compensation in addition to salary precluded the use of the FWW method.
L.A. council panel endorses $133 million in cuts to the LAPD - Los Angeles Times
A key committee of the Los Angeles City Council agreed Monday to cut the Police Department's budget by more than $133 million, slashing police overtime pay in the coming year and taking the size of the force well below 10,000 officers.
The Budget and Finance Committee endorsed the reductions on a 4-to-1 vote, saying such a move would begin the process of reimagining public safety in L.A. while also helping the city cope with a major budget crisis.
Under that plan, the savings would be plowed into housing initiatives, job programs, mental health counselors and other social services.
