SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. -- The county's $1.2 billion budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year, beginning July 1, includes an estimated $10.6 million in cannabis tax revenue, money that officials say will help backfill losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and the recession.
From July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, cannabis taxes are expected to bring in slightly more revenue to the county than sales taxes. In a budget report presented to the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, the County Executive Office said that cannabis tax revenue would help avoid layoffs, prevent library closures and reductions in hours, and pay for pandemic-related programs.

AASD trying to hold line on taxes | News, Sports, Jobs - Altoona Mirror
With a proposed budget of $110,422,893 and a deficit of about $3 million with no tax increase, the Altoona Area School Board is set to vote on this year’s budget on June 23.
At Tuesday evening’s finance committee meeting, board member Frank Meloy spoke against a tax increase in favor of closing the budget gap through cuts and attrition.
Meloy said that with people out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he doesn’t want to put an extra tax burden on them.
Why the Bell County property taxes are going up | kcentv.com
6 News spoke to Bell County Chief appraiser Billy White about those tax increases Wednesday. He said there are several factors at work.
The Bell County Tax appraisal district accesses property values on January 1 of each year according to the Texas property tax code.
At the beginning of 2020, White said there was a lot of demand for houses, and that affected prices. Later In April, Bell County realtors only had about two months of housing inventory available to sell, which White said was a record low.

Santa Monica moves forward with ballot measure to tax luxury real estate sales - Santa Monica
Santa Monicans will be asked to vote this November on a new tax on luxury real estate that would raise about $3 million each year for public services.
Goodwin Simon Strategic Research, research firm commissioned by the city, conducted a survey of Santa Monica voters on potential tax measures and found that more than 60% of voters support raising the real estate transfer tax on luxury properties.
Although the measure would raise $3 million annually in a healthy economy, city staff said it would generate roughly half of that amount for as long as the coronavirus recession lasts.
Did you move, even temporarily, because of coronavirus?
The coronavirus outbreak has kept many families at home , but it's caused some people to leave their home in search of more space and a change of scenery.
If the "new normal" means a new address — even a temporary one — that can mean a new set of tax issues, experts say. That's because states have different rules on how long it takes before a non-resident needs to start paying them income taxes.

Saudi Arabia Is Increasing Taxes During the Pandemic - The Atlantic
But the Saudi government—a highly autocratic regime—has historically resisted taxing its citizens for a reason: Taxes empower people to demand more from their government, and they can often be a trigger for democratization. "Taxation plays a profound role in the rise of democracy," Sven Steinmo, a political-science professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, told me.
Taxes have effectively existed since governments have—the former being necessary to fund the latter. Yet tax regimes like Saudi Arabia's are relatively new and uncommon, says Wolfgang Schön, a director at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance. With profits from natural resources, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have been able to build big governments with sizable social-welfare funds largely without asking their citizens to pay.
