Gains to diversification - Economists grapple with their race problem | Finance & economics |

I N JANUARY 1970 a group of black economists wrote a letter to the American Economic Association ( AEA ). They criticised colleagues who ignored discrimination in the profession and paid no heed to racial inequality in their own research. Just over half a century later, similar complaints have resurfaced. This time the AEA seems to be listening. On June 5th it issued a statement saying that "we have only begun to understand racism and its impact on our profession and our discipline."

Accurate economic research group using math derived from skull measurements sees slower recovery

The latest projections from economists for the shape of the recovery have quickly turned into an alphabet soup (V, U, W?), and the rising uncertainty about a coronavirus resurgence is making the task even harder.

One research group with some unusual methods it used to predict the current recession is out with a new outlook.

New research from State Street Associates and Massachusetts Institute of Technology indicates that U.S. economic recovery is most likely to be "U-shaped." The researchers had warned in January that the economy was vulnerable to a recession — with a 70% probability — even before the pandemic actually hit.

Second economist to leave White House | TheHill

"I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve on your Council of Economic Advisers for nearly three years," Philipson wrote to Trump in a June 23 letter announcing his departure that was posted to his Twitter account on Wednesday.

Philipson has served on the CEA for three years and was tapped by Trump to serve as its acting chairman in July 2019. Hassett had served as the chair of the council before him.

Trump has been optimistic about the road to economic recovery amid the pandemic, boosted by a surprise jobs report that showed the U.S. adding jobs during the month of May. Trump touted the job gains as perhaps the "greatest comeback in American history" during a Rose Garden press conference earlier this month.

What Economists Fear Most During This Recovery | FiveThirtyEight

As states push forward in their phased reopenings, we're getting clues that the beleaguered U.S economy might be on its way to recovery. Retail sales spiked by 17.7 percent in May , and the unemployment rate unexpectedly dropped in that month as well — suggesting that Americans were returning to work and opening their wallets earlier than many expected. But experts still think that even if things are starting to look up now, we shouldn't assume we'll be back to normal anytime soon.

Economic Recovery Is on the Way, Chapman Economists Predict in Forecast Update | Chapman Newsroom

The U.S. economy will begin its recovery from the coronavirus recession this summer, ending a deep and extraordinarily fast plunge in GDP, consumer spending and employment, according to Chapman University's Forecast Update presented by President Emeritus Jim Doti.

That will be thanks to attractive interest rates, modest construction and a combination of the fiscal stimulus packages and the Fed's purchase of government debt.

"It's the basis for our optimism in our forecast," Doti said in his annual presentation of the A. Gary Anderson Center's Economic Forecast Update on Tuesday, June 23. "By the end of the year we will be adding 18 million jobs, which is 75 percent of the 24 million lost."
