Building A Business By Solving Problems For Small Businesses

Entrepreneurs often solve their own problems. As a serial entrepreneur in companies as varied as manufacturing, systems integration, and products, Lil Roberts had seen that small business owners across industries often didn't have the timely financial key performance metrics they needed for informed decision making. She had started businesses from scratch, bought distressed companies and turned them around, but had never scaled a business with equity financing.

In 2016, she set out to digitize the process and, by 2017, she had built a minimal viable product (MVP) and launched Xendoo. The first half a million dollars was bootstrapped. Roberts invested her money into the company.

Big companies, especially those that favor stock buybacks and lean balance sheets, can learn from entrepreneurial ventures like restaurants and start-ups that have weathered the pandemic thanks to the ideas and commitment of its people — along with a healthy dose of old-fashioned financial caution.

The recent " Open Letter to Business Leaders ," written by three Harvard Business School students and cosigned by 1200+ MBAs and counting, appears to ask the impossible of the Fortune 500 CEOs to whom it is addressed. "Put your employees first now," it urges. "Retain them, re-deploy them if needed, and most importantly, pay them."

Council Post: When The Doors Open For Business Again

One thing people will want is answers — and they'll want them quickly. Many possibilities will be among them, and as such, real estate business owners need to organize themselves before (and after) restarting their enterprise.

* * *

One thing that you can do is prepare a list of actions that you know must be considered to restart your enterprise. Everybody's list will look different, but a few things to consider are the following:

Are your utilities on? Will you have sufficient power to start up and assess your equipment? Are the water and lights on? Each business operates with different types of equipment. Ensure you have or know when you will have these services by communicating with your providers.

'Black owned don't loot:' For some business owners, signs show solidarity - and provide protection

As looting spread from Center City two weekends ago, the Scurry family became desperate to protect La'Vanter, their women's clothing boutique in North Philadelphia.

Ninety percent of sales had disappeared during the pandemic, and another hit could finish their small company. Jamil Scurry, a store owner and former Philadelphia police officer, grabbed a large piece of vinyl and spray-painted it with the words he hoped would spare them:

* * *

It worked. Nearby businesses were broken into that weekend, Jamil Scurry said, but his was left undamaged.
