New York City Council to Consider Two Property Tax Deferral Bills

Two new bills in the City Council would allow New Yorkers to defer their property taxes and tenants to put off their rent, too.

The first bill would allow property owners whose buildings are assessed at more than $250,000 to put off paying the full amount of their property taxes. To qualify, taxpayers would have to show the occupant of the building was affected by limitations on "seating, occupancy or on-premises service limitations" from an executive order by the governor or the mayor between March 7 and June 30, or experienced an "unexpected decline" in income for more than 30 days during that period.

While you're here, how about this:

Crossing a line: When it comes to taxes, what does work-from-home mean for businesses whose

Cross-state commuters turned into housebound workers when the COVID-19 crisis led to the issuance of stay-at-home orders.

And, from the comforts of their own homes, accountants are advising businesses and their employees to be aware of the tax implications of that.

One might assume that a New Jersey business and its employees’ income wouldn’t be taxed by neighboring states if they’re just working from home for a few weeks or months during the pandemic. Not so fast, accountants say. State taxes can come into play if there’s any business being done inside a state’s borders, an obligation that accountants call a company’s tax "nexus."

A Road Map to Recreational Marijuana Taxation | Tax Foundation

Nevertheless, marijuana is an addictive product with certain societal costs, which means that states with legalized marijuana sales desire some control over the market. This control is maintained through a regulatory system as well as excise taxes.

Legalization of recreational marijuana is a still relatively new trend, but diminishing tax receipts from traditional sources of revenue as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, reports of growing marijuana sales, and popular support make it likely that more states (and maybe the federal government) will consider legalizing and taxing marijuana.

Bethlehem school district to hold the line on taxes despite pandemic's economic toll -

The Bethlehem Area School District was bracing itself for a tough 2020-21 budget after the COVID-19 pandemic brought the local economy to a standstill.

But instead on Monday night the district administration brought forward a $302 million budget that doesn't increase taxes for the second year in a row.

A majority of the school board indicated next week they'd approve a final spending plan that relies on $2 million of fund balance to close the deficit.
