Were you following this:

The rich are different — and taxes are a big part of the story

"Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me." Novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote that long ago.

* * *

But not in the way most people think. Yes, they "have money." Yes, some even "come from money." But that doesn't tell us very much.

Fortunately, we can get a whiff of how the rich are different at this time every year. This is when I do the paperwork so a CPA can do the Burns household tax return. Now, even though I am mostly retired, I get a small window into the difference between the rich and the rest of us.

Hemp, property taxes, agriculture were hot topics during Parma's Capital for a Day | ktvb.com

PARMA, Idaho — It was standing-room-only as Idaho Gov. Brad Little and about a dozen agency leaders spent the day in Parma, a city of just over 2,100 in northwestern Canyon County, answering questions from residents related to hemp, taxes, and agriculture.

Little held his first Capital for a Day event in 2020 at Parma's Anderson Hall on Friday. Groups of students, from elementary to high school were in attendance throughout the day, and several dozen residents approached the governor with questions about hemp, property taxes, agriculture and education.

Do Democratic candidates' proposed new taxes have any chance of passing?

Short answer: The only leading candidate who might succeed in passing a wealth tax is former Vice President Joe Biden, depending on the makeup of Congress. And the stock market won't like his nomination.

Current top tax rates are 40.2% for labor income (our paychecks) and 23.8% on investment income (our portfolios).

Biden's proposed wealth tax is slightly less than other Dem candidates' — a top marginal rate of 51.8% on labor and 43.4% on investment income.
