Blytheville firefighters fight for overtime pay, better treatment

BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. — Firefighters in Blytheville are taking legal action against the city, claiming they're not being paid proper overtime wages and are unfairly pressured to respond to calls, even when they are off-duty.

The legal action laid out in a demand letter sent to the city's attorney says the city violated the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and seeks damages for firefighters.

The personnel face disciplinary action up to termination if they fail to respond and aren't compensated for being on-call, unless they're actually called into work.

Pennsylvania One Step Closer to its Own Overtime Salary Threshold | Barley Snyder - JDSupra

Minimum salary thresholds for overtime pay have been a lightning rod for controversy both nationally and in Pennsylvania for the last five years.

While the federal government finally settled on its salary threshold in September and put it into effect at the start of this year, Gov. Tom Wolf has been working on Pennsylvania’s proposal to increase the overtime salary threshold beyond the federal threshold. The on-again, off-again plan is now back on, recently approved by the Pennsylvania Independent Regulatory Review Commission.

Illinois health system to pay $850K to end workers' overtime lawsuit

The plaintiff and the proposed class members worked for NorthShore as patient access representatives at a call center in Skokie, Ill. The complaint alleges the patient access representatives were not paid for time spent logging into and out of software programs required to perform their jobs. The plaintiffs claimed they're owed unpaid wages for the off-the-clock work under the Fair Labor Standards Act and Illinois state wage laws.

The parties agreed to engage in mediation and reached a settlement in December, according to a motion seeking preliminary approval of the settlement filed Feb. 6.

"I recently had a vein pop in one of my eyes but the insurance doesn't cover that," Hernandez said in a November interview. "I need to go to a specialist, but I can't afford that."

Lincoln's birthday costs Connecticut taxpayers $10.5 million | Yankee Institute for Public

Connecticut is one of only four states that give state employees a paid day off on February 12th for Abraham Lincoln's birthday, but while the state government may be on holiday, the cost to taxpayers is not.

Lincoln's birthday will cost roughly $10.5 million this year, based on Connecticut payroll data for the previous two-week pay period. It comes just days before another paid state holiday on the third Monday of the month: George Washington's birthday.

Polvo's Mexican Restaurant in Austin pays back wages, damages | kvue.com

AUSTIN, Texas — Polvo's Mexican Restaurant has paid $98,520 in back wages and damages to 19 employees after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor 's Wage and Hour Divison (WHD).

WHD investigators found that Polvo's Mexican Restaurant paid kitchen employees flat weekly salaries without regard to the number of hours that they worked. That practice resulted in violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) when employees worked more than 40 hours in a workweek but the employer didn't pay them overtime. Polvo's was also cited for recordkeeping violations of the FLSA and for failing to provide employees with information about the Family and Medical Leave Act .
