President Trump's executive order banning WeChat could have far-reaching consequences for almost the entire technology industry, thanks to the app's parent company, Tencent, having investments in companies like Riot Games and other US-based brands. But the ban could also have a big impact on Apple, which is deeply entrenched in China.
Apple has a significant Chinese customer base, and nearly all of its critical manufacturing and assembly partners are based there. Trump's ban might not only force Apple to remove WeChat from its App Store — which would destroy Apple's Chinese smartphone business — it could existentially change how Apple is able to build and sell new products in the future.

Heather Powell is the new manager of BERC, an American Job Center at 224 N. Center St., Westminster. BERC staff help people with resumes, hunt for jobs online, offer training, connect businesses with potential employees, and more, whether there's a pandemic or not.
BERC reopened by appointment only beginning July 27 and lately has been helping customers navigate the working world in the context of COVID-19. According to the Maryland Department of Labor, unemployment in Carroll County rose to 9% in April but fell to 6.4% in June, when the state stood at 8.3%.
Toshiba is officially out of the laptop business - The Verge
Toshiba quietly exited the laptop business once and for all last week, ending a 35-year run by transferring its remaining minority stake in its PC business to Sharp. Two years ago, Toshiba sold an 80.1 percent stake of its PC business to Sharp for $36 million, and Sharp renamed the division Dynabook. Sharp exercised its right to buy the remaining 19.1 percent of shares back in June, and Toshiba released a statement August 4th that the deal was completed
"As a result of this transfer, Dynabook has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Sharp," Toshiba said in a statement .

President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday banning transactions with ByteDance, the parent company of the popular social media app TikTok. The order in effect sets a 45-day deadline for an acquisition of TikTok, which is in talks to be acquired by Microsoft . Mr. Trump signed a similar order for WeChat, an app that is ubiquitous in China and used around the world by people of Chinese descent to communicate with friends, read news and carry out business transactions.
Retail sales figures for July will come out on Friday, but it's already clear that sales have still not bounced back to anywhere near pre-pandemic levels. Even with many stores now open, people are holding back because they're wary of bumping up against other customers in stores and are cautious about spending money in a weakened economy. Economists expect July's gains to be smaller than the past two months, after a 18.2 percent monthly jump in May and a 7.5 percent increase in June.
Business is at a low in downtown Bangor, but street closures have helped with the losses
Two months after Bangor city officials closed off part of Broad Street in the city's downtown to vehicular traffic, and began allowing businesses to set up "parklets" outside their locations, most downtown business owners seem to agree that the measures have helped them as they struggle to keep business going during the pandemic.
Business is still down overall throughout the downtown area, but the ability for businesses to set up shop outside has allowed some to shrink their losses this year.
