The New Deal and Recovery, Part 8: The NRA | Cato @ Liberty
"Without Roosevelt's intervention, the economic recovery that lasted from 1933 to 1937 would have been weaker and shorter—-not unlike our own recovery after the Great Recession." (David Weiman, "Imagining a World without the New Deal," The Washington Post , August 12th, 2011 .)

In the previous installment to this series , I showed how the U.S. economy owed most of the recovery it experienced between 1933 and 1937 to an onrush of "hot money" from Europe that revived aggregate spending. I also explained how that hot money owed its warmth, not to any steps FDR took in the U.S., but to the martial maneuverings of Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler.

Assemblyman Christopher Friend urging farmers to participate in hearing on labor wages - 870 AM
ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Assemblyman Christopher Friend's urging upstate farmers to speak-up during a series of hearings on labor wages.
The hearings will look at the issue of overtime pay for farm workers. Under the Farm Laborers Act signed into law in 2019, workers became entitled to overtime this year. Assemblyman Friend says active participation will help ensure family farmers and rural communities have a say in how farms are ordered to operate.
Seattle's spending priorities matter to businesses large and small - Lens
The Seattle City Council last month passed a new payroll tax intended to help plug shortfalls in the city budget, and there's a strong likelihood other new tax proposals are in store. The council also aims to revise the 2020 budget enacted earlier this year, with its proposal recently vetoed by Mayor Jenny Durkan in part over spending cuts to the Seattle Police Department (SPD).
Economic development experts say both the council's strategies are bound to backfire at a time when Seattle's businesses are struggling to remain open during the ongoing pandemic response. While Seattle City Councilmembers have argued new revenue is needed, others have questioned the city's spending priorities over the past decade and how cuts to the police department could further undermine business recovery.

N.Y. Farm Workers Poised To Receive Overtime Benefits | WSHU
New York lawmakers will hold three virtual hearings this month to decide how many hours farm employees must work to receive overtime. The first hearing is this Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The state Farm Laborers Wage Board will have the authority to set a threshold for a new law that took effect in January to pay farm workers overtime. The proposed threshold is working a 60-hour-week to start making time-and-a-half.
Farm workers have never received overtime before. Some farm owners on Long Island say they can't afford it because their business is seasonal.
