Chicago looting boosts business for board up and glass repair services

Normally Budget Board & Restoration completes 10 board-up jobs a week, but following last week’s looting spree the North Side company completed 30 jobs in two days.

“I would say business is booming for every board-up company in Chicago due to the looting that has taken place,” said Carlos Flores, the company's president. “Business did not double for us, but tripled.”

“These businesses have valuables they wanted to protect and did what needed to be done to protect their merchandise," said Flores. “And when nearby businesses saw their neighbors getting proactive, they followed suit.”

Representative for Utah's House District 24, Jen Dailey-Provost , Democrat, said she feels blindsided after learning three Utah health clinics would be shutting down because of a $2.5 million cut made earlier in the 2020 session.

How to Get the Most Out of Your New, Lean IT Budget - InformationWeek

At many companies, IT budgets are being trimmed. IT decision makers faced with financial cutbacks tell us they’re concerned about maintaining service levels, their 2020 projects, and aligning their organizations with 2021’s business objectives.

However, a smaller budget alone is not necessarily a problem for IT. Even with budget adjustments, it’s still possible to meet customer expectations and uphold the integrity of solutions. The larger problem is when organizations haven’t allocated budget to support IT innovation in the first place. As a result, they wind up with duplicate or inefficient investments that don’t fulfill key business outcomes.

Here's what defunding the police would look like in your city

The Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit working to make the justice system more equitable, worked with design agency Hyperakt to create a graphic called “ What Policing Costs. ” It allows you to peek into the books of 72 U.S. cities, seeing how much they spend on policing and adjusting how much money you would (hypothetically) allocate to various functions within the police department.

[Image: Vera Institute of Justice/courtesy Hyperakt] There’s no central database for police budgets across the country, so volunteers at the Vera Institute looked at local budget documents in 72 cites, manually recorded 2,699 rows of data, and centralized it to create this searchable tool. Users can explore police budgets through four key data points: overall budget, percent of city funds spent on policing, city money spent on police per resident, and the police-to-resident ratio.
