State agencies in fiscal year 2020 spent nearly $235 million on overtime wages, a modest increase compared to the year prior, according to new data.
A report released Wednesday by the Office of Fiscal Analysis says the state's overtime spending in the 2020 fiscal year, from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020, ran $600,000, or 0.2%, above fiscal year 2019.
Part of the reason for the increased overtime pay could be that Connecticut's workforce is smaller than it was in previous years.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Prison psychiatric nurses with badges and guns — who exist only in California — clocked $6.7 million in overtime last year, more than a decade after a federally appointed receiver decided the dual role should be eliminated.
According to salary data obtained by CalMatters, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation paid overtime to approximately 250 employees who functioned as both nurses and correctional officers at three psychiatric programs in the prison system.

An attorney for a former Massachusetts State Police lieutenant charged with overtime pay fraud says the law enforcement agency has lost tens of thousands of e-mails related to the high-profile criminal case, pointing to records that suggest the department can't locate most e-mails prior to 2018.
Attorney Timothy M. Burke argued Wednesday in a state court hearing that the charges against retired Lieutenant David Keefe should be thrown out because the state can't locate the e-mails that Keefe had sought as possible exculpatory evidence, showing he was on duty during the times prosecutors say he skipped work but still collected pay.

Reasonable people can disagree whether the business model of Uber, Lyft and other transportation services is a model of flexible part-time work or cruelly exploits non-employee workers.
Their drivers, often using their own vehicles, are paid by the ride, giving rise to the term "gig economy."
Uber, et al, contend that they give drivers opportunities to voluntarily supplement their incomes by working whenever it suits them. It's not uncommon for someone to simultaneously drive for both Uber and Lyft.
