Tax Preparers Would Pay Fee for ID Number Under IRS Rules (2)

Paid tax returns preparers would again have to pay an annual fee to obtain or renew mandatory ID numbers under proposed IRS regulations.

The proposal follows the D.C. Circuit's 2019 ruling in Montrois v. United States , which held that the agency could reinstate fees for preparer tax identification number. That ruling resolved a class action brought by a group of tax preparers who challenged the fee.

The IRS in proposed regulations ( REG-117138-17 ) released Wednesday suggested an annual fee of $21, plus an additional processing charge for third-party vendors. The last time preparers had to pay a fee it cost them $33, plus the processing charge.

State Should Hold the Line on Oil and Gas Taxes, Regulations | County 17

Wyomingites have long supported the oil and gas industry; it provides jobs and critical revenue streams for our state, counties, and local communities. But now, industry executives and lobbyist groups are using the pandemic as an excuse to dodge their financial obligations to the state.

During the recent legislative session, Wyoming approved a 2% severance tax break for new oil and gas wells when the price is below $50/barrel for oil and $2.95/1,000 cubic feet for gas. Study after study has shown that tax rates do not determine whether a well gets drilled. The most important factors are geology and market forces.

Talking Headways Podcast: Laws Prioritize Cars Over People – Streetsblog USA

This week, we chat with University of Iowa Law Professor Greg Shill . In our broad-ranging conversation, Shill discuss his recent research on the normalization of motordom and how we can't really opt out of it, the idea of automobile supremacy, the legal subsidies to driving and even the tax benefits associated with cars.

JW: And it’s interesting the way we talk about it, too. I was surprised recently when I saw that there was some research that came out talking about all the particulates that come from automobiles that are not related to CO2, right? So we have the brake dust and we have particles from all the rubber that gets pulled off of the wheels when people are driving around. There’s trillions of particles that are in the San Francisco Bay, for example, that we just learned about.

The Coronavirus Bailout Puts Banks First, Workers Last - Barron's

The first wave of coronavirus stimulus checks have been deposited , but most American workers and small businesses are getting the short end of the stick. Banks and corporations, on the other hand, are getting VIP treatment.

The difficulty small business owners have in getting relief stands in contrast to how large corporations are receiving aid. Distressed industries will have essentially no independent oversight of the $500 billion in bailout money the Cares Act included to support workers after President Donald Trump sacked the chairman of a panel established to oversee disbursements.

PTIN fee will be lower when it is reinstated - Journal of Accountancy

A valid PTIN must be obtained by anyone who prepares or assists in preparing a federal tax return for compensation. The PTIN system provides tax return preparers an identifying number that is not a Social Security number to include on tax returns.

When the government appealed the Steele case to the D.C. Circuit, the appeals court held that the IRS has authority to charge a user fee for PTINs, paving the way for the agency to reinstate a fee for obtaining and renewing a PTIN ( Montrois , 916 F.3d 1056 (D.C. Cir. 2019)). However, the D.C. Circuit remanded the case to the District Court for the District of Columbia to determine if the amount of the fee unreasonably exceeded the costs to the IRS to issue and maintain PTINs.
