Ogdensburg Mayor Jeffery M. Skelly has promoted yet another measure for the city to adopt without doing his homework on the topic.
On Monday, he issued a news release announcing his plans. He said that he intended to pursue them with other members of the City Council.
"In a press release Monday, Mr. Skelly said the economic downturn resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic means he and other city officials will need to be 'forward thinking' in the upcoming weeks and months, especially as it relates to spending taxpayer money," the news release said. "Mr. Skelly said he plans to advocate for merging the city's Parks and Recreation Department with the Department of Public Works as one way to improve efficiencies and save money.
Avoiding Layoffs Where Possible During The COVID-19 Pandemic
Some employers need to make tough decisions as to whether to lay off parts of their workforce at this time. Of course, some layoff decisions are unavoidable or are reasonable given the current economic circumstances. But, where the economics permit, employers would benefit from considering alternatives to wide-scale reductions-in-force with an eye towards satisfying a reignited demand while maintaining the quality of the company brand.

CARTERET – The mayor has called a report of a COVID-19 outbreak at one of the Amazon facilities in the borough "disturbing on every level."
The report by Business Insider said more than 30 employees who work at one of the Amazon facilities in the borough have tested positive for COVID-19. The report, which was published Thursday, said it appears to be the worst known outbreak at an Amazon facility.
Amazon has yet to report on the severity of the outbreak in their facility, Mayor Daniel Reiman said in a news release.

United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County announced Friday it has raised more than $77,000 for its COVID-19 Carlisle Area Emergency Response Fund.
United Way partnered with the Carlisle Borough to start the fund in March to help deal with the emerging needs of the community related to the global pandemic.
"We thought we might be lucky to raise $5,000 or we might raise over $25,000," said Lucy Zander, executive director of United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County. "We decided to aim high and set the goal at $50,000 without any indication as to whether it would be at all attainable. How many people, places of worship, organizations and businesses could you expect to donate when the economic forecast was looking so bleak?"
