States Are in a Quandary as Taxes Evaporate and Virus Spending Soars - The New York Times

The ballooning costs of the coronavirus pandemic have put an unexpected strain on the finances of states, which are hurriedly diverting funds from elsewhere to fight the outbreak even as the economic shutdown squeezes their main source of revenue — taxes.

States provide most of America's public health, education and policing services, and a lot of its highways, mass transit systems and waterworks. Now, sales taxes — the biggest source of revenue for most states — have fallen off a cliff as business activity grinds to a halt and consumers stay home.

Can you alter your 2019 taxes in order to qualify for the $1,200 stimulus check?

I have three children in college, aged 20, 23 and 25. I support them as best I can. In 2018, claiming my oldest as a dependent made no difference in what either of us paid in taxes, so I did not claim her as a dependent. She filed as an independent. In 2019, tax-law changes once again made it advantageous for me to claim my oldest as a dependent.

I now regret doing that and, unfortunately, I have already filed. It appears that I do not get the $500 child-dependent stimulus for any of my three dependent children, but had I waited until after the stimulus checks had been issued to file my 2019 taxes and my daughter's taxes, my oldest would have received the $1,200 stimulus check because she filed as an independent in 2018.

Taxfix raises $65 million for its mobile tax filing app – TechCrunch

Berlin-based startup Taxfix has raised a $65 million Series C funding round. Index Ventures is leading the round with Neil Rimer joining the board. The company started its fundraising process before the coronavirus process and managed to sign all contracts a few days ago.

The app asks you simple questions to maximize your tax refunds. As you start answering questions, Taxfix selects the next relevant questions and hides questions that don't apply to your current situation. Taxfix accepts photos of your payslip so that you don't have to file forms. It then submits your filing to the tax office.

Tax Day is now 3 months away. Here are 3 tax savings opportunities

It's April 15, and while federal income tax returns don't have to be in today, there are still a few savings opportunities if you know where to look.

In light of the coronavirus, the U.S. Treasury Department and the IRS moved Tax Day to July 15, giving individuals 90 more days to file their 2019 returns and pay any taxes owed.

That also means if you haven't filed your tax return yet, you have three more months to strategize on the best ways to save.

Stimulus checks, unemployment bring up new tax questions | WKBN.com

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – April 15 is Tax Day every other year but COVID-19 has changed things this tax season.

Andrew Reigstad, the owner of Tax 29, said filers will still face penalties if they miss the new deadline.

The government stimulus checks have started going out and those with banking information on file with the IRS are seeing those deposits.

“They’re able to get their deposit a little bit quicker,” Reigstad said. “If you don’t have a direct deposit on file with the IRS, they may need to wait longer to get that check.”
