Other Opinion: End distasteful tax on COVID-19 relief | Brainerd Dispatch

Sounds like a success, right? The power of our representative government stepping up to help us little guys at a time when we need it most.

Minnesota Chamber President Doug Loon sized it up like this last week in an interview held virtually with the Grand Forks Herald: "Minnesota did not create the (Paycheck Protection) Program. The federal government did. But now Minnesota wants to grab some of it."

This tax on COVID relief is particularly difficult for recipient businesses along Minnesota's borders, including in Duluth. That's because all the states bordering Minnesota already automatically comply with or took measures to mitigate the federal tax impact. Minnesota businesses are being left at a competitive disadvantage, bearing a tax penalty just for accepting help it desperately needed, while businesses across the border in Wisconsin, the Dakotas, and Iowa aren't similarly taxed.

Lockdown hits RDF market | Resource Magazine

The third wave of COVID has hit the waste industry, introducing new and serious challenges. Signs are that 2021 will be a tough year for the European EfW sector, argues COO Ralf Schöpwinkel at Geminor

COVID turned 2020 into a year we will never forget. But even though the pandemic was a considerable shock to the system, the waste industry across Europe showed the ability to adapt and solved most of the challenges introduced by COVID. In fact, many industry players experienced growth in 2020 despite a turbulent waste market. And by the end of the year – with new vaccines being introduced at a record-breaking speed – most of us hoped for better days and a relatively quick normalisation.

Squeezed by Digital Giants - Opinion en.tempo.co

TEMPO.CO , Jakarta -  The merger of Gojek and Tokopedia will begin a major disruption to the Indonesian economy. The government must anticipate the consequences for tax revenues and the quality of the workforce.

The digital business in Indonesia is about to enter a new phase. The planned merger between Gojek and Tokopedia followed by an initial public offering of shares, as well as a similar plan by Grab and a number of other startup companies, will accelerate the expansion of the digital industry into the financial and retail sectors in Indonesia. The government must draw up proper regulations to ensure that we do not simply turn into a market and fail to enjoy any benefits from this consolidation.

Is Line Of Duty set on an alternate Earth? | The New European

On Sunday night I was (like, apparently, 80% of the population of the United Kingdom) watching Line of Duty on BBC 1, when I had a sudden realisation: Line of Duty takes place on an alternate earth.

Two things give it away: First of all, the events of this season are quite explicitly set in a 2020 in which there appears to be no Covid pandemic.

Secondly, in Line of Duty world, while corruption in high office does sometimes go unpunished, it is least officially frowned upon and there are still laws against it.
