Elegant chemistry, a humane view of robots, and refugee economics: Books in brief

When Francis Crick and James Watson discovered DNA's double helix, they privately called it "beautiful", says science writer Philip Ball. But in 1953, "such expressions of exuberance were not welcomed in the austere annals of science". Ball's scintillating book is a paean to chemical beauty in nature and laboratories, with lavish images created by Wenting Zhu, Yan Liang and the Chinese Chemical Society, using microphotography, time lapse, thermal imaging and more.

GPS depends on phenomena described in the general theory of relativity, but nothing in the theory predicted it. The possibility of GPS was thus a "counterfactual", notes theoretical physicist Chiara Marletto, whose engaging book centres on these "facts about what could be". By restricting itself to statements about initial conditions and laws of motion, she says, physics "is missing something essential".

Ohio's $1 Million Lottery For Vaccinated Adults Draws On Behavioral Economics

Ohio's vaccine lottery will give $1 million prizes to five residents who have received at least one ... [+] dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Both of these suggest that a $1 million prize may make headlines, but may be overkill. Instead, Ohio could consider using the $5 million budget to offer smaller prizes for a longer duration than the currently planned five weeks.

UW economics professor explains statewide inflation, how long it could last – KIRO 7 News Seattle

Washingtonians may be surprised when paying more at the grocery store, but it's an expected consequence for economists like Will McGuire, an associate professor of economics at the University of Washington Tacoma.

"In reality, the average retail price of gasoline right now is pretty much the same as it was in May of 2019," McGuire, who teaches at UW's School of Interdisciplinary Arts, said. "Gasoline actually decreased in price pretty significantly last summer. The average retail price across the whole country fell to about $2 per gallon."

Clemson economics professor, gas station director react to panic-buying gas | News |

(GREENVILLE, SC/FOX Carolina) - As concerns about fuel supply increase with the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, a petroleum analyst for GasBuddy said the worst thing people can do is fill up their gas tanks if they don't need to.

An out-of-control Chinese rocket plunged out of orbit Saturday night ET and reentered Earth's atmosphere, according to China's space agency.

Chicken, lumber, microchips, gas, steel, metals, chlorine and ketchup packets: What do they all have in common? They're all (nearly) impossible to find.

YOUR VIEW: Economics 101 With CFP Ilene Davis, 'What You Don't Understand Can Cost You'

The May 10 edition of USA Today had a snapshot survey which asked people if they support a $15/hour minimum wage and 62 percent said they favor it. Add in those who favor an increase, but to a lesser amount and the total in support of raising the minimum wage approaches 87 percent.

For example, what if instead the survey asked "How much would you be willing to pay for a meal, products, services in order to cover the increased costs to a business if the minimum wage were increased by some specific amount?"

EU economy forecast to rebound faster thanks to Covid vaccine | Economics | The Guardian

The economy of the EU will bounce back more quickly than expected, owing in part to the quickening pace of its vaccination programme after a "slow start", the European Commission has forecast.

The brighter outlook from Brussels also takes into account payouts from the EU's €800bn (£686bn) recovery package and a sharper than predicted rebound in global trade and activity, largely driven by the performances of the US and China.

The commission forecast the EU's GDP would grow by 4.2% in 2021 and by 4.4% in 2022, compared with a prediction in February of 3.7% and 3.9%. The eurozone's GDP is forecast to grow by 4.3% and 4.4%, respectively.
