Aftermath of Martinez-Cuevas v.
Washington’s Supreme Court disrupted the state’s agricultural industry on November 5, 2020, when it held that the agricultural overtime exemption at RCW 49.46.130(2)(g) violated the state’s constitution as applied to dairy workers. As a result, all dairy employers immediately had to start paying their workers overtime at a rate of 1.5 times their regular hourly rate.
While not explicitly addressed, the Martinez-Cuevas v. DeRuyter Brothers Dairy decision raised significant concerns throughout the agricultural industry regarding (1) whether the decision would be applied to all agricultural employers, not just dairy employers, and (2) whether the decision would be applied retroactively.

Former Santa Cruz sheriff referred for criminal charges for misusing public funds, forgery
Former Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada and one of his captains might face criminal charges for misusing public money and ordering sheriff's office employees to forge timesheets so they could claim pay for unworked overtime over the course of two decades.
The Arizona Auditor General discovered that Estrada and the unnamed former captain illicitly authorized $196,842 of unearned overtime pay for 77 employees between 2013 and 2018. The employees were directed to add overtime to their timesheets whenever they did special duties that were considered beyond their pay grade, like "employees performing as a field training officer, communications training officer, lead officer, or lieutenant," the audit found .

More Than 30 Boston Police Officers Netted North of $300k in 2020: Report – NBC Boston
More than 30 police officers in Boston were paid more than $300,000 in 2020, according to a report from the Boston Globe .
In addition to the 30 officers who made more than $300,000, 509 officers in the city earned at least $200,000, according to the report.
Part of the reason for such substantial figures was overtime pay, necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic and other officers being unable to work at various points.
Despite the fact that there were no large events such as the Boston Marathon or any championship parades which would require a large police presence, more than 300 officers were out of work due to either testing positive for COVID-19 or being a close contact of someone else who had.

Under the new program, the school district is setting aside $190,000 to pay designated school employees to make sales pitches to former public school families who left last year for private schools, charter schools or home-schooling.
School administrators hope that, by using staff members with community ties and reaching out to families during off-hours, they can win back some of the thousands of students who left amid uncertainty about how and when their campuses would reopen last summer.
