SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) — As Sacramento City Council members get ready to discuss the city’s budget for the upcoming year on Tuesday, newly released numbers from the Sacramento Police Department on how much they spend on overtime is causing some concern in the community and city council.
In the last two years the Sacramento Police Department has spent close to $30 million on overtime and so far this year, close to $5 million.
"Wow. That’s a lot of money," said Sacramento District 4 Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, District 4.

Chicago – On Friday, May 16, 2021, Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced a consent decree with a Chicago roofing company resolving allegations the company unlawfully withheld overtime wages from its workers, some of whom often worked over 60 hours a week. The lawsuit and consent decree are the first the Attorney General's office is filing using its authority under a worker protection law Attorney General Raoul initiated in 2019.

The justices left in place a lower court's 2020 ruling that revived the lawsuit filed by Ali Razak, Kenan Sabani and Khaldoun Cherdoud, who worked as drivers for UberBLACK in Pennsylvania.
Razak, Sabani and Cherdoud accused Uber of violating federal minimum wage and overtime pay requirements, arguing that they should be classified as employees due certain benefits and protections denied to contractors.

SPRINGFIELD — Salaries for municipal and school employees totaled $370.6 million in 2020, up just 1.1% from 2019, according to a review of city data by The Republican.
The city's payroll last year included 414 employees whose earnings topped $100,000, representing just under 6% of the workforce. Springfield Police Department personnel and city department heads dominated the highest pay totals — which is typically the case — with many officers earning tens of thousands of dollars in overtime and Quinn Bill education incentive pay.

Of course, these challenges pale in comparison to those who are out of jobs entirely. And although unemployment has since dropped down below 10%, it's still much higher than it was before the pandemic.
One could argue that it's the nation's essential workers who have it the worst. These workers have been forced into situations that compromise their health and that of their loved ones with little additional compensation. If they haven't lost their jobs entirely, many have to endure gruelingly long hours for wages well below the national average. Some hourly workers need overtime to make ends meet, while others, such as nursing assistants, may have no choice in the matter.
