Gov. Greg Abbott invited all Texans to celebrate the unique role small businesses play in the economic resurgence in communities throughout the state of Texas as he issued a proclamation officially designating May 9 through 15 as Small Business Week in Texas.
"An amazing 99.8% of businesses in the Lone Star State are small businesses. They are the heart of every Texas community, and their continuing resilience drives local job creation and fuels our mighty economy," Abbott said.
Business forecast points to continued economic improvement in 2021 - Turlock
Though the official report won't be out for a couple more weeks, Dr. Gökçe Soydemir recently presented 2021-2023 San Joaquin Valley Business Forecast's mid-year update to the Turlock Chamber of Commerce, painting an optimistic picture of recovery for the region as COVID restrictions continue to lift.
In June 2020, Stanislaus State's first of two forecasts authored by Foster Farms Endowed Professor of Business Economics Gökçe Soydemir correctly predicted that economic recovery would begin during the second half of 2020 — so long as everyone adhered to COVID-19 precautions and protocols.
Black Women Are More Likely to Start a Business than White Men
Despite starting businesses at a high rate, 3% of Black women are running mature businesses. In contrast, white women are more than twice as likely to be mature business owners (7%), despite starting at lower rates. This disparity between high startup and low established business activity among Black women suggests potential issues with sustaining a business.
In the United States, an astounding 17% of Black women are in the process of starting or running new businesses. That's compared to just 10% of white women, and 15% of white men.
Ralph Smith adds rental business to his Mine Oyster Restaurant | Boothbay Register
Ralph Smith has cooked up another business venture to join his Mine Oyster and Boat House Bistro restaurants. Smith bought Hawke Rentals from Leila Hawke, who sold the business before moving to Florida. Before COVID-19 times, Smith catered nearly 50 events per year and used Hawke Rentals to supply tables, chairs and tents. Smith's catering business benefited greatly from a local, inexpensive service.
So when Hawke decided to sell, Smith was the first call she made. "It was always a good option for us. They had all the things we needed at a good price," Smith said. Mine Oyster can cater an event as small as 25 to 250 or larger events with 300 guests, or corporate events with 500 guests. Before Hawke Rentals, Smith's options were limited to more expensive out-of-town rentals. Adding the rental business to his catering enterprise provides another service for customers at an inexpensive cost.
Where Is The Bottleneck Between Business And IT Aligning?
Stuart McGuigan, the former CIO of the U.S. Department of State and, earlier, the CIO of Johnson & Johnson, says innovation-driven companies (like pharmaceuticals) usually "either furiously spend money to support the launch of new products or later go back and then cut costs. To do both at the same time requires an operational mindset and an incredibly focused use of technology."
He commented that organizations can do a lot of things in agile that make IT more efficient. But there are certain critical things every organization must do that are essential to generating the right business outcomes. He shared that while he was CIO at the U.S. Department of State during the initial COVID-19 crisis, the IT group was under tremendous pressure to support remote work, something they had never done at scale before.
