My new book, Economics In One Virus , uses the pandemic to highlight a range of economic principles and ideas. But there has been plenty of interesting new applied economics on the pandemic since its publication. The latest is a fascinating paper by the University of Chicago's Casey Mulligan on the economics of COVID-19 mitigation in the workplace.
Basic epidemiology suggests the risk of getting infected with COVID-19 was much higher in workplaces or other crowded gatherings than staying home, right? Well, not necessarily, at least on a per‐hour basis. The risk balance is also affected by prevention measures taken at each venue and these are often far more significant at work than at home.

Coyle, who is originally from Saylorsurg, Pa., will use her scholarship to examine the relationship between neighborhood characteristics—such as the quality, quantity, and price of grocery stores and fast-food establishments; levels of physical inactivity in the neighborhood; and how much money people spend on food away from home—and obesity rates, with a specific focus on Baltimore City. What it's like to studying economics at Columbia University
The Department of Economics at Columbia University is home to eight Nobel Prize winners. These past and present professors, plus one instructor are Edmund S. Phelps, Joseph E. Stiglitz, James J. Heckman, Robert A. Mundell, William Vickrey, Gary Becker, and George J. Stigle.
The undergraduate had chosen to major in Economics to answer why his home country Mexico's gross national income is nearly ten times lesser than the US despite having a population nearly triple the latter. We caught up with the senior student to learn more about his BA in Economics, what Phelps's class is like and his future plans:
ODU economics professor says mask lift should boost local economy
HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Federal officials have cleared the way for those who are fully vaccinated to put the mask away in most situations. The lift is a big win for struggling businesses, says Old Dominion University economics professor Robert McNab.
McNab said pre-pandemic, Virginia's economy grew for 11 straight quarters, then shrunk a whopping 27% in the second quarter of 2020. He's now forecasting an uptick.
Economics profession needs greater diversity to enhance innovative thinking
In a world where the number of publications is an indicator of your value, women researchers are penalised for any time spent out of the workforce to have children or engage in care duties.
Academic conferences of economists are an important showcase for new research, enabling the exchange of ideas, and allowing authors to benefit from peers' comments. The American Economic Association in January each year is one of the premier conferences. As well as hosting a huge number of papers, this conference has long been a hiring fair, where both US and European universities spot and interview new talent.
Economics In Brief: It's Not That People Don't Want to Work, It's That Work Is Broken –
Social media has been abuzz this week with restaurants and hotels claiming they can't find enough workers to fill open jobs — one study from the conservative-leaning NFIB said 44% of businesses were lacking employees . Republicans have blamed the stimulus and unemployment payments as disincentivizing work. But what's really going on is more complicated.
The Washington Post reports that many analysts say the lag in hiring is "an anomaly" and that more people will go back to work once they get vaccinated. Others suggest a lack of child-care is still holding back job gains — and in fact, all 266,000 jobs the economy did add in April went to men, while women actually lost jobs.
