Taxes Are Due May 17, Four Reasons To Extend To October 15

A road sign alerting to the 2021 tax filing extension announced by the IRS in front of the U.S. ... [+] Capitol building.

1. Extending avoids mistakes. Use the time to gather records, consider reporting alternatives, and get professional advice. File accurately the first time so you don't have to amend later. Amended returns often come about because people are rushing and make mistakes, sometimes big ones. Although there are times you may want or need to amend, use amended returns sparingly. Amended returns are more likely to be audited. File once correctly so you don't have to do it again.

State Digital Taxes: Details & Analysis of State Digital Tax Proposals

These taxes are fraught with legal difficulties, administrative challenges, and economic inefficiencies. They tax activity that is already taxed by other means, and rationales for this additional level of taxation tend to be as weak as they are inconsistent. With enactment of Maryland's first-in-the-nation digital advertising tax, however, some lawmakers in other states are eager to get on the bandwagon.

The European tax model, however, is not the model of U.S. states, which use formulary apportionment to allocate corporate income to states for tax purposes. The U.S. system of apportionment is complex, inconsistent, and often flawed, but the failure to tax income derived from online advertising (or from digital services more generally) is not among its shortcomings.

Skelton: California shouldn't raise taxes when it has surplus - Los Angeles Times

It's income tax time across America, but in the California Legislature it is always tax time. Some Democrats never stop trying to raise taxes. It seems addictive.

Yet, during the young legislative session lawmakers have already proposed raising taxes and fees by an unbelievable $234 billion annually, according to the California Tax Foundation. That's a research nonprofit founded decades ago by the California Taxpayers Assn., an anti-tax lobby.

True or False: If you didn't get a tax form, you don't have to report the income.
False.

As more states push for residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine, some are getting creative by offering perks to motivate more people to get fully vaccinated -- and West Virginia is one of them. If you're in West Virginia and you're planning to get the shot soon, it may pay off. To that end, West Virginia's governor, Jim Justice, recently announced that residents 16 to 35 will be eligible to receive a $100 saving bond if they get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Taxes are complicated and grow more so | New Hampshire | eagletribune.com

More than two thousand demonstrators rally on the plaza and lawn in front of New Hampshire's Statehouse Thursday, March 31, 2011 to protest proposed spending cuts and a provision that would strip public employees of their union protection when their contracts expire, in Concord, N.H.

New Hampshire has a unique tax system, unlike most other states, there is no income tax unless you are elderly or wealthy enough to pay the interest and dividends tax, or a general sales tax, although the Granite State is rife with taxes on sales from cigarettes to beer and from hotels to houses.

Clashes over taxes, Walz's powers stymie budget talks - StarTribune.com

It was always going to be a heavy lift: Set the next state budget with a politically divided government and vastly opposing views on taxes and government spending.

Throw in a global pandemic, lingering uncertainty around public health and federal aid and passionate disagreements over police reform. Oh, and conduct some of those tense negotiations over Zoom.

"We have not the greatest track record of ending on time. And this year COVID, emergency powers, federal money, police reform, make ending on time even more difficult in 2021 than in the past decade," said Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman of Brooklyn Park.

Rethinking Retirement: Managing your taxes

ST. LOUIS – Taxes are inevitable, but a retirement expert has some tips on how to manage them.

Marvin Mitchell, senior financial planner and president of Compass Retirement Solutions, explains the three tax buckets to be aware of.

Mitchell says there are three tax buckets. The first bucket is tax-deferred. This is like a 401k and IRA. The second bucket is the taxable bucket. This is money not inside of an IRA or 401k and then you pay dividend taxes every year. Then there is the tax-free bucket. This is everyone’s favorite.
