Virginia Enacts New Overtime Wage Law - Employment and HR - United States

On March 30, 2021, Governor Ralph Northam signed into law the Virginia Overtime Wage Act (VOWA), creating new wage and hour requirements for Virginia employers. Set to take effect July 1, 2021, the VOWA also includes numerous employee protections. The VOWA amends the Virginia Code to authorize collective actions and allows for a lengthier statute of limitations period and increased damages provisions.

Until now, Virginia did not have its own overtime pay statute. Instead, Virginia employees relied on the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to govern their wage and hour requirements. The FLSA requires that most employees in the United States be paid at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked and overtime pay at not less than time and one-half the regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 40 hours in a workweek.

Does an employer owe you money? How to check for and claim unpaid wages - CNET

Do you have unpaid wages you're entitled to claim from the federal government? The Department of Labor in 2020 recovered $257 million in back pay. The department recovered the cash from employers who owed workers money from withholding overtime pay, for example, or paying under the minimum wage.

The Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor over the last five years has recovered back wages for more than 1.3 million workers. If the government agency discovers that an employer owes you back wages, it can make the company pay out the difference. However, if the agency can't locate you to give you the money (for example, you moved or changed your name), it will hold onto the back wages for you to claim.

Wilson Creek area expecting huge weekend crowds, deputies to work with off-duty pay

LENOIR, N.C. (WBTV) - A signup sheet is filling up at the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office where deputies are being asked to help out in controlling crowds and enforcing rules along Wilson Creek during the holiday weekend and throughout the summer.

The area where they are needed is a 2 1/2 mile stretch of road alongside the river that is in the Pisgah National Forest.

The U.S. Forest Service does not have enough personnel to watch the area during busy times so the feds are hiring deputies to help. The work is in addition to their normal shifts as deputies and the feds will be footing the bill.
