To Win Electric-Vehicle Wars, Europe’s Auto CEOs Want More Taxes on Gas Guzzlers - WSJ

"We need to tax carbon at the pump," Markus Duesmann, chief executive of Audi AG, said in an interview.

One avenue for the tax hikes is through carbon pricing—a dollar price on carbon emissions that sets a base for levies and taxes on emissions—which is one of the tools governments have deployed to fight greenhouse-gas emissions. Higher carbon pricing ultimately leads to higher prices for fossil fuels.

With Pot Taxes, It's Bad to Get Too High - WSJ

This year will be the first that New Yorkers can legally light up a joint on April 20, the unofficial marijuana holiday known as 4/20. It will still take time to persuade them to buy supplies from a licensed seller rather than an illegal dealer, but a reasonable cannabis tax rate should help.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the marijuana industry could eventually generate $350 million in annual taxes for the state. That is a modest sum for New York, which raised $81 billion in levies overall in the 2020 fiscal year. But if the governor's estimate is right, pot will become a bigger source of tax revenue than alcohol, which generated $260 million last year. This is already the case in Illinois, where monthly pot levies overtook alcohol for the first time in February.

What CEOs, CFOs Are Saying About the Prospects of Higher Taxes - WSJ

Executives at American companies are bracing for higher taxes following the unveiling of President Biden's $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan, which is proposing to raise the corporate tax rate to 28% from 21%, and increase taxes on companies' foreign earnings.

The proposed tax changes would overhaul or replace much of the international tax structure that came with the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Companies are also weighing potential implications of the global minimum tax for multinational corporations that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen floated earlier this month.

Businessman Charged with Failure to Pay Employment Taxes and Attempt to Obstruct the IRS | OPA |

A federal grand jury in Atlanta, Georgia, returned an indictment yesterday charging a Georgia man with failing to pay employment taxes and with obstructing the collection efforts of the IRS.

According to the indictment, from 2009 through 2018, Douglas Mittleider, of Adairsville, was in charge of several long-term care facilities located throughout the United States, and was responsible for withholding and paying employment taxes on behalf of his employees. Notwithstanding his obligations, Mittleider allegedly did not fully pay over these withholdings, resulting in an outstanding balance of more than $10,000,000 being owed to the IRS.
