Did Home Economics Empower Women?  | The New Yorker

Home economics was a movement that emerged in the late nineteenth century with high ambitions. Though it had precursors in the domestic-advice manuals of writers like Catharine Beecher, earlier in the century, the conference that officially heralded the discipline's arrival was held in 1899, in Lake Placid, New York.

But contradiction—"hypocrisy" is a word that Dreilinger uses at one point—characterized the field from the beginning. Maybe it characterizes every endeavor in which people are compelled to use the side door when they ought to be able to use the front.

Super League pits economics against history in a clash of cultures - France 24

As the clubs who want to form a Super League focus on their economic futures, they find themselves attacked on all sides for being at odds with football's past.

"Created by the poor, stolen by the rich," read one banner held up by fans outside Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium on Monday. It summed up the frustration that has been gripping most football followers since the plans were announced.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said the proposed closed breakaway league was "a spit in the face" of "football lovers".

Manchin and UMW's Roberts push for federal union legislation and improved economics for coal

Senator Joe Manchin and United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts together endorsed legislation to strengthen labor unions, pushed for federal investments in carbon capture technology, advocated for using coal to make steel in the United States and called for building up coal-producing communities that have languished in recent years.

“We’re very much interested in protecting existing coalfield jobs,” Roberts said. “I would say to our friends in government and high places that we’ve just about had all we can take of layoffs and people losing their jobs in the coalfields. It doesn’t have to be that way.”

"It was a huge surprise," said Andrews, 34. The award was announced Tuesday, but he was informed last Friday that it was coming and so was able to celebrate with his husband with champagne before the announcement went public and the phone started ringing. "I am stunned and overwhelmed."

Politics and economics have come to a head for China, the US and the EU | TheHill

China has been the main driver of the global economy in recent decades. It played a key role in shaping globalization and provided the West with the opportunity to keep up ultra-loose fiscal and monetary policies due to downward pressure that Chinese labor and products have exerted on global inflation .

China first and foremost represented an economic opportunity — geopolitical concerns would be dealt with at a later stage. Later has become now. This makes Western leaders nervous. The West and China are increasingly in direct competition with each other, while they would previously mainly complement each other.
