Tax Rules Your Lawyer Might Not Know

Many lawyers are asked about tax issues, at least in a general way. For example, clients may ask whether legal fees they pay are tax deductible. Unfortunately, many tax issues are complex, even tax deductions for legal fees. Except for tax lawyers, many lawyers try to steer clear of tax questions. Still, many lawyers want to have some tax knowledge, so they know when there are tax dangers, and when to suggest that clients should get some tax advice of their own.

With a settlement, your shot at cooperation is while you are hammering out a settlement agreement.  So, if you want to say anything in a settlement agreement about taxes, ask for it as part of your other comments. Once a settlement agreement is signed, there is no incentive for the parties to cooperate. If you have ever tried to go back to a defendant after a settlement agreement is signed to say "hey, we were not expecting a Form 1099 for that payment," you know this.

A guide to tax deductions for 2020, especially if you worked from home

After a year unlike any other, it makes sense that filing your 2020 taxes will be different from years past. Understanding which tax deductions apply to you and your specific situation could decrease the amount you owe to the government and increase your tax return. There may even be a few things you aren’t thinking about after a year filled with so many changes.

The COVID-19 pandemic turned the working world upside down in 2020. The number of employed Americans working from home over the past year skyrocketed from 20% pre-pandemic to 71% by the end of 2020, per a Pew Research Center study.

Opinion: A very German way of handling the COVID-19 pandemic | Opinion | DW | 19.04.2021

Who is to blame the German status quo? Angela Merkel? The federal system? Coronavirus deniers? Jens Thurau explores why Germans are so dissatisfied with the situation across the country.

It's tough keeping abreast of the latest coronavirus rules in my region of Germany. Like many of my neighbors, friends, colleagues and relatives, I'm sticking to my own, personal lockdown regime that is stricter, I'd say, than what German officials are calling for. We'll be fine, all things considered.

Just cancel the Future of Europe Conference

Leaders of the EU institutions, along with political elites, are gearing up for the Conference on the Future of Europe: an ambitious year-long exercise to determine the direction of the EU for the next few decades.

No matter how hard they try to make these future-looking discussions citizen-driven, bottom-up, and representative of European society, the voices present will not speak for what the majority of Europeans want.
