City Workers Win $65K In Back Pay | New Haven Independent
The city government has made the first payments to public works and parks workers to whom it owes over $65,000.
The payments come as a result of a federal Department of Labor ruling that the city shortchanged the workers $65,808 by miscalculating overtime pay over a two-year period ending on Dec. 31, 2020.The department also ordered the city to install a new system to calculate overtime moving forward.
The ruling followed an investigation sparked by a complaint from United Public Service Employees Union (UPSEU), which represents more than 150 city government workers.

Sources and court records confirm trooper Kevin M. O'Brien of North Reading has paid $80,000 and trooper Robert Freniere of Agawam $30,000 for overtime pay they received for hours they never worked. The state alleges O'Brien collected pay for 1,056 hours of phony overtime and Freniere was paid for 369 hours. Under the terms of the settlements the troopers did not admit or deny any wrongdoing.
City Smacks Down 'Forensic' Study of Police Overtime – Pasadena Now
According to a graphic provided by the UCLA School of Law's Criminal Justice Program performed a study of publicly available Pasadena Police Department (PPD) spending records for 2015 to 2019 and found that the department could have saved the police budget as much as $4.6 million in overtime spending in 2019.
"In the five-year time period, PPD increased overtime payments to its officers by 43%. As the report indicates, the $4.6 million saved could have enabled Pasadena to increase housing services or funding to the Human Services and Recreation budget, both of which receive less funding than PPD," said co-authors Alicia Virani, director of UCLA's Criminal Justice Program, and Leah Gasser-Ordaz, Youth Justice Fellow with the Program.

The House adopted an amendment improving the language of the bill by putting its main provisions into one section. The bill still contains the same substantive provisions as it did when passed the Senate several weeks ago, the federation said.
